BET To Air Weekend of HIV, AIDS Programming
BET To Air Weekend of HIV, AIDS Programming

HIV and AIDS reaching epidemic status in the black America. With that in mind, BET will roll out a special slate of programming this weekend beginning Friday, which is World AIDS Day.

The AIDS-themed programming will begin with that day’s installment of 106 and Park, which will feature celebrities and experts offering advice on healthy choices that reduce the risk of spreading the disease, including testing.

Saturday evening, two HIV-themed episodes of Girlfriends will air beginning at 9 p.m. ET. Those episodes will be followed by the BET News special On the Downlow Exposed, a look at men who are publicly heterosexual but privately sleep with other men. Let’s Talk, a short film about the discussions between a couple brought on by taking an HIV test, will follow.

Throughout the weekend, public service announcements about HIV and AIDS will air on the network.

This is just BET’s latest initiative to raise awareness of HIV and AIDS. The network’s Rap-It-Up program, in conjunction with the Kaiser Family Foundation, has offered forums on the diseases, handed out over 400,000 brochures and tested over 9,000 people for HIV and AIDS.

O.J. Book and TV Special Canceled

O.J. Book and TV Special Canceled, Simpson’s Lawyer “Pissed” With O.J.

After a firestorm of criticism, News. Corp. said today (Nov. 20) that it has canceled the O.J. Simpson book and TV special If I Did It.

"I and senior management agree with the American public that this was an ill-considered project," said Rupert Murdoch, News Corp. chairman, according to the Washington Post site. "We are sorry for any pain that this has caused the families of Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown Simpson."

A dozen Fox affiliates had already said they would not air the two-part special, planned for next week before the Nov. 30 publication of the book by ReganBooks. The publishing house is a HarperCollins imprint owned - like the Fox network - by News Corp.

In both the book and show, Simpson speaks in hypothetical terms about how he would have committed the 1994 slayings of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman.

Relatives of the victims have lashed out at the now scuttled publication and broadcast plans.

"He destroyed my son and took from my family Ron's future and life. And for that I'll hate him always and find him despicable," Fred Goldman told ABC last week.

One station manager who had said he wasn't airing the special said he was concerned that whether or not Simpson was guilty, he'd still be profiting from murders.

"I have my own moral compass and this was easy," said Bill Lamb, general manager of WDRB in Louisville.

For the publishing industry, the cancellation of "If I Did It" was an astonishing end to a story like no other. Numerous books have been withdrawn over the years because of possible plagiarism, most recently Kaavya Viswanathan's How Opal Mehta Got Kissed, Got Wild, and Got a Life, but a book's removal simply for objectionable content seldomly occurs.

Sales had been strong, but not sensational. "If I Did It" cracked the top 20 of Amazon.com last weekend, but by Monday afternoon, at the time its cancellation had been announced, the book had fallen to No. 51.

Meanwhile, in the November 27 issue of Newsweek—on newsstands now—Simpson’s lawyer, Yale Galanter, says he was “pissed” that O.J. did not tell him of his plans. He also said that profits from the sale of the book would be “blood money.”

“I wouldn’t have done it for a gazillion dollars,” Galanter said.

Simpson’s children, though, approve of his decision to publish “If I Did It,” where he says how he would have killed his ex-wife and her friend if he were their killer. Simpson’s four children, two from his marriage to Nicole Brown Simpson and two from a previous marriage, are not speaking publicly about the book.

Newsweek also offers a glimpse into why Simpson decided to write the book. Some friends say it’s proof that he truly has nothing to lose. Another friend says he’s frustrated from trying to please the families of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman.

"There is nothing he can do to make the Goldmans or Browns happy," says a close family member. "He would have to drop dead and that wouldn't be enough. They would find something wrong if he was saving dying kids in Africa."

Fans, Stars Send Levert Home In Style

Fans, Stars Send Levert Home In Style

On Friday, some of black music’s biggest names and more than 10,000 fans filled the Cleveland Convention Center to say a final goodbye to Gerald Levert.

Among the big names present were Stevie Wonder, Usher, Patti Labelle, Yolanda Adams and Gerald’s father, Eddie Levert of the O’Jays. Journalist Ed Gordon and television personality Judge Greg Mathis were among the eulogists. Angela Winbush also sang her classic “Your Smile,” a performance highlighted by her removing her false eyelashes on stage.

“I’ve been crying all morning, y’all,” she explained after removing the lashes and getting into the song.

Eddie Levert and his son Sean, who joined Gerald in the group Levert, brought the house down with a rendition of Luther Vandross’ “Dance With My Father.”

Fans began lining up at 6 a.m. on a rainy Cleveland morning to make sure they got in to this public memorial service to pay tribute to the soul singer, who died November 10 of a heart attack. By 10, the line had turned one corner and approached another. Many fans drove from several states dressed in purple, Levert's favorite color, to attend the ceremony.

The service lasted more than three hours, and it was more celebratory than depressing. “When I came here, I expected to mourn,” Usher told the crowd. “I actually cried tears of joy.”
