Croquet Strategy for Beginner, Intermediate & Advanced Players on CD-ROM

Produced by the Croquet Foundation of America, these three books by Bob Kroeger and Ted Prentis are now available on CD-ROM.   The CD-ROM can be downloaded and printed as books as desired.  They feature many pages of text and court diagrams WITH THE BALLS IN COLOR rather than the normal black/shaded balls with initials.  This makes viewing and understanding the diagrams easy.

INTERNATIONAL RULES: THE LAWS OF ASSOCIATION CROQUET

The book details the International (or "Association") rules for 6-wicket croquet which govern the sport as most often played in countries other than the U.S. and Canada.


NATIONAL CROQUET CALENDAR

Published six times a year, the Calendar has a small subscription base limited mostly to USCA tournament players. Billing itself as "The Croquet Player's Journal," it features the most complete listing available of upcoming tournaments and tournament results, as well as lively and often controversial articles on the USCA and current issues and personalities in the sport. USCA CROQUET SHOT-MAKING INSTRUCTION MANUAL

The USCA's basic text on the full variety of croquet strokes, including stance, grips, swngle-ball strokes, rushes, take-offs, full- and half-rolls, and more, with practice drills and exercises, illustrated. This manual is intended for use with the heavier, professional level of mallets and balls used at USCA clubs and sports facilities.

The 1995 edition deals mostly with the USCA 6-Wicket American Rules game, but also includes new Advanced Tournament Rules for 9-Wicket Croquet as well as basic and advanced rules for Golf Croquet.


USCA CROQUET NEWS

Published four times a year, this official newsletter of the USCA is mailed to all members, included in the annual cost of membership. Also included in your membership are the OFFICIAL USCA RULES, the USCA CROQUET DIRECTORY, and other communications on tournaments and membership affairs. "At large" membership is available directly through the USCA for $50 for individuals or $75 for couples. (The USCA membership, when taken through a USCA club, is available for a somewhat lower cost, and is often included in club membership dues.)



JOHN RICHES BOOKLETS

The following croquet booklets by John Riches are available for loan from Conrad Haas (see contact information listed below). 

John Riches is a world-class player from Australia who graciously gave the set for our use.  While the International game (Association Rules) is referenced, much can be learned from the techniques, strategies and mental approach presented.

1. Croquet Technique - Describes in detail how to play each shot, together with an explanation (not found in other croquet books) of why the recommended technique is correct.  (20 pages)

2. Croquet Coaching: Error Correction - Deals with 20 common problems.  Explains where the coach should stand, what to look for, and how to go about correcting each problem.  Useful for players as well as coaches.  (30 pages)

3. Croquet: Next Break Strategy - Aimed at players capable of continuing breaks once tehyh are set up.  Contains explanations and examples of many frequently overlooked tactical ideas, and how they can ber used to achieve the aim of obtaining the next break.  Includes "ideal leaves", Maintaining the breark:, "The art of manoeuvring", etc.  Has proved invaluable to players who previously had difficulty coping with their opponents' "Aunt Emma" tactics.  (70 pages)

4. Croquet: The Menal Approach - Covers in detail many aspects of psychology as related to the game of croquet.  Chapter headings include 'Overcoming Nervousness;, 'Confidence Building', 'Psychology of Tactics', 'Psychology of Coaching', and many others.  (50 pages)

5. Croquet: Lessons in Tactics - A collection of more than 50 short magazine articles, each explaining one or more tactical ideas frequentlyh overlooked by players.  Guaranteed to enable you to win many games you would otherwise have lost.  (approximately 50 pages)

6. Croquet Referees Guide - Covers things that a referee needs to know, but which are not found in the Laws Book (International Rules).  (20 pages)

7. Croquet: Finer Points - Contains valuable insight for players and coaches at all levels.  Allmost twice the size of "Lessons in Tactics".  Topics covered include Basic Techniques, Mallets, Laws, Gamesmanship, Psychology, Pegged-out games, Rich Taking, Percentage Play, How to Play Agressively, and General Tactics.  (approximately 100 pages)

THE ART OF SEXTUPLE

This video tape features Robert Fulford (another world-class player) at Sonoma-Cutrer displaying his skills at producing a sextuple.

SERIOUS SPORT - CROQUET - SERIOUS FUN

This 10 minute video tape was produced by the United State Croquet Association.  It give a brief description of how the game is played, shows a number of attractive locations and features many players commenting about how they enjoy the game. 

A great introduction for prospective players and new croquet clubs.  The video tape can be obtained from the USCA or by loan, contact Conrad Haas at ce.haas@verizon.net.
