District Highlights of 2004

VaWVa State Championships – Fulks Run. VA  (May 21-23, 2004 – Last yr.)

Darrel Turner wins again for the 8th time, defeating his cousin, Ron Turner 21-14.  Ron earlier won over his dad, Garnett, who took third place.  All are members of the Fulks Run Croquet Club

Bob Whitmore, Confederate Hills CC, won the First Flight 22-21 in a tight match for the second straight year, winning over Miles Turner (Darrell’s father), Fulks Run CC, 16-14.  Miles had been undefeated until the final match.  Conrad Haas, Confederate Hills CC, placed third.

In Memory of …

Mary Wilson, Pinehurst Croquet Club, died November 16, 2004 in Pinehurst, NC where she had retired.   Mary encouraged many players to take up croquet and become better at their game.  She also helped Henrico County start the Confederate Hills Croquet Club that continues to thrive today.

John Houston, Jr., Confederate Hills Croquet Club, died December 3, 2004.  His fellow players will miss him on Thursdays and Sundays.

Special Recognition

Many continued thanks to Scotia Synan for her work as secretary and Robert Lankford (and his lady, Sherry, in the background), as treasurer in 2004.

Most Active Clubs.

·        Urchie Ellis leads the Confederate Hill Croquet Club (Richmond). The club won third place in the “Most Media Attention” to the sport category for its activities on National Croquet Day August 18 to gain USCA recognition.  They play on most Thursdays and Sundays.

·        Tom and Sally Williams continued instrumental in bringing nationally known instructors like Archie Peck and Bob Kroger to The Country Club of Virginia Croquet (Richmond).

·        The Fulks Run Croquet Club with the Turners (including Ron and Peggy) Travis Watson, and Bob Lanham and Norm Hardee, Crest Ridge CC, again made their beautiful courts available for the State Championships and were gracious hosts to the participants.

·        Joe Wood, III was elected president of the Charlottesville CC.  They play regularly on Wednesdays.

·        The Middle Peninsula Croquet Club, in Gloucester, VA continues playing on Mondays.  John Lee is their president, ably supported by Jack Chase.

Interclub Play

Following up the interest in club play, the Confederate Hills CC and Middle Peninsula CC had several home-to-home matches during July and August 2004.

In September, the Confederate Hills, Middle Peninsula and Country Club of Virginia croquet clubs played some fun matches on the excellent lawns at the Williamsburg Inn.
