Bloody Hurtgen Forest

In late November and early December, the Fifth Armored was committed in the bitter and ill-considered Battle for Hurtgen Forest. The Division was committed piecemeal and often used to bolster infantry division units that had been decimated in earlier fighting. This combined with the dense pine forest prevented the trademark coordinated attacks at which the division excelled. Instead, each gain of a few yards exacted a frightful price in dead and wounded. The month in the Hurtgen Forest was the darkest period in the division's combat history.
