President Bush's AWOL facts.

Ahhh. Election years. The anticipation, the patriotism, the feeling of "brotherhood", the smearing.... Yes every year we get to see what each of the major two parties will try against the other. In the year before the 2004 election, the Dems and Anarchists did not give up on President Bush's military records of the National Guard. It was a slight voice during the 2000 election, but now it has become a major media topic. Why? Because none of the media outlets had anyone to look at the President's military records who was indeed in the military or a military expert that was a retired military personnel. How does one interpret these papers without knowing what the columns mean? You just make something up. And that's just what the left-leaning media has done. If your agenda is to negatively assault the President so the American public won't vote for him in the coming election, then you join in the game.

The negative press says this: George W. Bush was AWOL from the Alabama National Guard from May 1972 and May 1973. He then surfaced and received an Honorable Discharge. His father, George Bush Sr. had pulled some strings to allow these actions seeing as how his son was already into politics.

The truth is: George W. Bush did fulfill his duty in the National Guard. He was never found to be AWOL. He was never found to be a "deserter" as Michael Moore would like you to think. CBS news has printed a story on the subject. In it they write that after the military papers were released to the public:

"A memo written by retired Lt. Col. Albert Lloyd Jr., at the request of the White House, said a review of Mr. Bush's records showed that he had "satisfactory years" for the period of 1972-73 and 1973-74 "which proves that he completed his military obligation in a satisfactory manner."

Even with this evidence, the left-leaners still have a problem. The Washington Post story caused a real raucous among bloggers of the left persuasion. The title was Many Gaps In Bush's Guard Records. How lovely. Slanted as the story was, it was filled with more smear and unsubstantiated nonsense. Here are some links to some people who reported on the papers evidence but were from the military:

Citizen Smash, a Reservist who spells out what missing "drills" is all about.

Baldilocks, an Air Force Reservist who explains the columns on the Bush papers.

Blackfive, a retired Army Lt. who explains the Boston Globe's story on the subject.

Calpundit's archives have a post from 20 yr. veteran of the Army and Army Reserve who explains things in depth.

The Mudville Gazette, from whom I got some of these links explains more stuff.

Bill Hobbs reports on one witness, Joe LeFevers, who served with Pres. Bush during his supposed AWOL.

The Boston Globe finally admits that Retired Lieutenant Colonel Bill Burkett lied in a previous story about records being sanitized. Oops!

Captain's Quarters enlightens us to the errors and retractions of the left-leaning media.

Instapundit reports on retired Lt. Col. John "Bill" Calhoun who admits seeing Pres. Bush during the supposed AWOL.

Bill Hobbs again pointing out that as time went on, he was right and the media was wrong...again!

This all boils down to "the media was wrong- and the President was right".

This political flood happened to President Clinton if you recall. He was accused of being a "draft-dodger". Here's one sight that breaks down some of the accusations. Read that first; it's alarming. Here's an email that was floating around:

Unrefuted Facts:
It's common knowledge that Bill Clinton is a draft dodger, but here are the unrefuted facts...

Bill Clinton registers for the draft on September 08, 1964, accepting all contractual conditions of registering for the draft, given Selective Service Number 3 26 46 228.

Bill Clinton classified 2-S on November 17, 1964.

Bill Clinton reclassified 1-A on March 20, 1968.

Bill Clinton ordered to report for induction on July 28, 1969.

Bill Clinton dishonors order to report and is not inducted into the military.

Bill Clinton reclassified 1-D after enlisting in the United States Army Reserves on August 07,1969 under authority of Col. E. Holmes.

Clinton signs enlistment papers and takes oath of enlistment.

Bill Clinton fails to report to his duty station at the University of Arkansas ROTC, September 1969.

Bill Clinton reclassified 1-A on October 30, 1969, as enlistment with Army Reserves is revoked by Colonel E. Holmes and Clinton now AWOL and subject to arrest under Public Law 90-40 (2)(a) "registrant who has failed to report...remain liable for induction."

Bill Clinton's birth date lottery number is 311, drawn December 1,1969, but anyone who has already been ordered to report for induction is INELIGIBLE!

Bill Clinton runs for Congress (1974), while a fugitive from justice under Public Law 90-40.

Bill Clinton runs for Arkansas Attorney General (1976), while a fugitive from justice.

Bill Clinton receives pardon on January 21, 1977, from Carter.

Bill Clinton FIRST PARDONED FEDERAL FELON ever to serve as President.

All these facts come from Freedom of Information requests, public laws, and various books that have been published, and have not been refuted by Clinton.

------------------------------

However, if you click over to ABC news (try PBS's site now), they have the Clinton letter that was leaked to the press, and a transcript of a Nightline show where then Gov. Clinton speaks about the charges. According to Gov. Clinton:

"A Republican member of my draft board was given an affidavit in the last couple of days saying that I got no special treatment and nothing in that letter changes that, although it is a true reflection of the deep and conflicted feelings of a just - turned - 23 - year - old young man. I felt that at the time."

Koppel says:

"But what you're saying is that December 1, you get your high lottery number, December 2, the letter goes off to Yale Law School, December 3, you write your letter to Colonel Holmes. That's just coincidence of timing, I mean, there's nothing to read into it."

Clinton says:

"I say, I just don't remember, and there's nothing to read into it. The important thing for the American people to know is that in late September, early October, sometime about that time, I think it was in September, I had talked to my stepfather, I asked him to talk to the draft board and to Colonel Holmes, asked that I be put back into the draft. I was put back into the draft before the lottery came along, before I knew my lottery number, and I was in the draft. If I had drawn number one or number 10, none of this would have happened and we wouldn't be having this conversation today."--Clinton drew a #311 I believe.

So according to Pres. Clinton, he either had to go to law school or Vietnam. His Stepfather had called the draft board to see what he could do. Clinton pulled a #311 and ended up missing the draft. Clinton calls his acceptance letter written to Yale Law School just something you had to do in case he didn't get drafted so he would then not miss the chance to be enrolled. The fact that it was written the day after he drew his number is mere coincidence.

If he was indeed a draft-dodger, no one could do anything anyway because Pres. Carter pardoned all the Vietnam draft-dodgers first thing in office in 1977.

Smearing is the "norm" now I guess in the media when it comes to politics and political issues. If you can defame the speaker, then what the speaker says or said must be refuted as lies. Or the speaker is labeled as some "crazy man" who can't lead a country ala Ross Perot, and Steve Forbes. Then it makes it hard for those of us who care to actually find the truth. And when we do find it we doubt it's authenticity because of bad journalism. Guess I'll just use my computer for gaming and tune my TV to the Cartoon Network! All this digging with no shovel is making me tired.
