Brief
History of Our Club by Hugh Worth
The Chelmsford basstacklers were formed in the early 70's by
Hugh Worth, Jamie Worth and Don Sullivan. The original idea for the club was to be a teaching club. In the early days, the
few clubs that were around were strictly competitive. Club members would not share information as to how to catch bass and
this meant that no-one got any better. We in Chelmsford thought that it would be a better idea to share all the secrets and
methods and fishing info, and as a result everyone would get better sooner.
Somewhere along the line in the early
days I was contacted by the presidentof a club (Merrimack valley bassmasters) in Lawrence Mass. He thought we should have
a competition to see which was the best club around the area. The Charity tournament was born as a result. Each club would
send it's best ten fishermen with entry fees from each. Half of the money raised would go to the charity decided upon by the
winning club, the other half of the money went to the winning club. The results the first year was that Chelmsford finished
dead last. However we were young and still sharing information while the others were not. the Chelmsford Basstacklers won
the event the last six years and the other clubs haven't been close. Goes to show you what helping each other out can do.
