Click on the picture above to get a better view of Smokey. It appears
that it forms a "head" at times, a distinctly human shape. It looks like the genie from Aladdin in this shot. I stepped through
the fence scene frame by frame and it takes on some interesting shapes. It also formed a rough circle and spun briefly after
it smacked into the fence.
Lots to think about after tonights episode. I got the impression
that the monster could have grabbed Kate and Juliet both times they encountered it. It would almost seem that it was purposely
herding them back to the barracks for some unknown reason.
This idea comes from a thread on the ABC Lost message board: Perhaps in the first encounter it scanned the women
then brought the info back to process itself or deliver to it's controller/master. Once judgement had been passed it was returning
to enforce the "sentence".
I'm not sure, but the whole scenario didn't make much sense to me. Why were Kate and Juliet dragged out into the jungle
but Jack and Sayid left at the camp? Watching the show I said "Ah-ha, they gassed them all and dragged them far away so that
they wouldn't see how to get through Sparky the Fence and also wouldn't see which way the Others were heading.". Then later
in the show when I realized that the men were still at the barracks, I was really scratching my head. They seemed to have been
unconscious for a much longer time than the women. Could be because Kate and Juliet were removed from the room and weren't
continuing to breathe the gas like the guys, but somethings definitely amiss there. I think it's more likely that Kate may
have been knocked out first, then moved, possibly even by Juliet. Although carrying Kate wouldn't be an easy task, we did
see that Juliet is surprisingly athletic.
If I were to believe the whole Smokey scanning, then passing judgement,
then returning for enforcement of sentence scenario, it would fit that perhaps Ben put the women out there because he knew
they would fight, and the monster would sniff them out. Jeff Jensen theorized in his review today that he thought Smokey was
incited and attracted by sin and pride. So many ifs.
Meanwhile, back on the beach...
I really enjoyed Hurley's long con on Sawyer and I liked the way the episode covered
both the happenings at the barracks and back at the beach.
Hurley was right when he said that during the Nikki and Paulo drama everyone looked
to Sawyer for answers, and that Sawyer needed to be more of a leader.
Hurley is developing into one of those behind the scenes guys, like a campaign manager,
that sees what needs to happen and then steers the more charismatic and likeable politician in the right direction. Sawyer
was even cracking election jokes. There is always someone who stands out as a leader,
who everybody defers to instinctivley. Think about the last time you had jury duty. It's usually pretty obvious who will be
the Foreperson within the first few minutes you are together. Thing is, it doesn't always turn out to be the person who's
best qualified for the task. Seems the Losties are lucky to have someone like Hurley who has a good heart and who's main goal
is to make peoples lives a little easier. He seems to understand that he can't influence the herd, but sure can influence
the shepherd.
In the end, both stories seemed to be mainly about sin and redemption.
So, that still leaves us with the Kate/Cassidy connection and the crazy ass
Locke developments. Let's start with Locke because I think that's the easiest one to explain.
As I've said before he's convinced that "he's on a mission from God". (every time
I say that I get this mental image of Dan Akroyd in dark shades and a pork pie hat). He wants to infiltrate the Others so
that he can throw a monkey wrench into whatever plan they have. That, and I'm also sure that the weaker part of him is lured
by the promise of finding out why his father is there and what secrets Ben can tell him about the island. He's positive the
island cured him and now he's also convinced that it delivered his father to him. Hard not to be influenced by events
like that.
I think the Kate/Cassidy connection, as well as all of the connections
between all of the various Losties, is why they are all there in the first place. Their lives and their various dilemas and
miseries are deeply intertwined and I think that fate or God has put them in this place, at this time, to do something spectacular
that will not only save the world and/or rid it of some great evil, but will allow them to atone for their previous sins.
