Catch-22

hawking.jpg

Were you screaming at the TV like I was? STOP HIM DESMOND!

I usually only do that when I'm watching the Sox.

I was positive that Des would stop him, but that was tense. Very good job. The episode was pretty funny too, nothing like a good camping trip to lighten things up. Plus there was the “Easter Egg” that Jeff Jensen alerted us to watch out for. The ring lady from Desmond’s key turning magical mystery tour, Ms. Hawking, was in the picture on Brother Campbell’s desk.

When Desmond mentions the abbey's wine being named Moriah after the mountain where Abraham went to sacrifice his son Issac in Genesis 22, he and Brother Campbell enter into a disscussion about whether God should have asked Abraham to kill his son in the first place. Brother Campbell replys that if God had stopped Abraham sooner it wouldn't have been much of a test, and continues on to say that perhaps Desmond underestimates the value of sacrifice.

Later we see the picture of the fortune telling ring lady on his desk, and then he introduces Desmond to Penny. Throughout the flashback we hear about a "higher calling" for Desmond, both from himself and the Brother.

Genesis 22 = Catch 22 ?

It would seem that Ms. Hawking telling Desmond that he can't change anything was a test of the highest order.

We've seen some great shows since the series restarted and we're getting a lot of information, but to date I haven't seen anything to shake me from my original thoughts. Tonight's events actually reinforced them.

I still firmly believe that when boiled down to it's essence, the show is no more than a classic Stephen King type of battle between good and evil. I think Ben wants to think that God doesn't see the island, but Locke, and now Desmond, are proof that he is incorrect. It seems increasingly evident that Ben is perplexed by the "blessings" the island has bestowed on Locke. Now add tonight's insight into Desmonds's past, the connection between Brother Campbell and Ms. Hawking, and the long awaited contact with one of Penny's people and I'm totally convinced that their paths are being guided by a higher power.

I think that in the end, why Dharma was on the island and what they were doing will be relatively unimportant. A mere plot vehicle to bring us to the realization that the universe does course correct, because the ultimate bus driver, God (feel free to insert your own deity here), is always watching over us.

I still gotta know all the details though.

Here's something I missed. Check out the screen caps I have of the satellite phone. The phone looks more like an iPhone than a sat phone. There aren't any with a touch screen like this currently on the market, let alone 3 years ago. Is this a case of artistic license or a clue that more time has passed than we realize?
