The Brig

Locke family portrait

Wow.

That was unbelievable. Hell, purgatory or something else? Lots of answers and a few new questions. Looks like the writers have heard the fans loud and clear. Here's just a few of the answers we got:

Losties talking about incidents that they weren't a part of, proving they do discuss things.

Naomi's freighter 80 miles off shore.

"The Box" is a metaphor.

815 found off the coast of Bali and the bodies identified by underwater camera.

The Others have been anxiously awaiting Locke.

The Others files include things that happened in Australia, and supposedly weren't wittnessed by anyone.

Cooper is the real Sawyer.

The Losties don't trust Jack.

3 days til the raid.

Sayid confirms that Naomi's sat phone is "very modern and exotic".

Whoa... almost too much to grasp.

I didn't like the way Ben and Richard were egging Locke on to kill his father so that he could "find his purpose" and be one with them. Richard took it a step further and told Locke that they were tired of Ben trying to distract them with fertility issues and they needed someone to remind them that they were there for a more important purpose. Is there really unrest with Ben's leadership or is this all part of the plan?

If Jacob turns out to be someone we already know, my money's on Richard Alpert. Is he creepy or what?

I get the feeling that Locke's going through an initiation that will come to no good. The island may have many secrets that Locke (and all of us!) want to find out about, but Ben isn't the source he should be looking too. The price is too high.

I think that killing (or setting up a killing in this case) wasn't a good thing for him, even though Cooper deserved it. I think it will be the beginning of the end for Locke. Previously he seemed to be "favored" by the island, much to Bens distress. Now it seems that Ben wants him to have blood on his hands, possibly in an effort to take Lockes island mojo from him. After last nights events Locke has moved up in the season 3 death pool for me.

The encounter in the brig was intense and although I really wanted to see Cooper get what was coming to him, I felt bad that they were using Sawyer to do the dirty work. He seemed to be turning a corner prior to this. Did Ben and/or Richard know this and want to put up a roadblock on his path to redemption? Great writing and acting by all!

I think we've seen 2 episodes recently that put the focus character to a huge test of their values and morality. In Catch-22 Desmond passed the test, saving Charlie even though he believed it was a fools errand and would alter the outcome of his vision, possibly costing the life of the one he loved. He did it because regardless of the consequences he couldn't let a man die.

This week we see Locke offered the things he desires most, to be accepted and to be a leader. All he has to do to attain them is kill his father. He can't bring himself to do it because deep down he knows it's wrong, and he doesn't have the courage to tell the Others that they must accept him as he is. Instead he's played by Ben and sets Sawyer up to do it for him, then hoists the body over his shoulder and heads off to the Others camp as the conquering hero. I would grade this test with an F.

I know that Locke's motives were altruistic to this point, that he was convinced that he would infiltrate the Others and stop whatever they were up to. A lean, mean, sub blowin machine. But once he got there, things changed. The Others really seemed thrilled that he was there, and Ben is going to show him all he's ever wanted to know. Played by a master again.

Ok, enough on Locke and Sawyer. Let's talk about Naomi for a moment. Is she for real or is she trying to distract the Losties with hopes of rescue? Between her story and Sawyer showing back up with Juliet's tape it will be pretty hard for them to get organized and put up a united front against the Others impending raid. Sounds very Ben-ish too me...

We also saw Rousseau stocking up on fireworks. Is it to use agaisnt the Others? It would appear so, as she doesn't seem too frightened of Locke, but how does she know that trouble (and enough trouble to warrant dynamite) is coming? She's either psychic or very well informed.

Also, Sayid seemed to be surprised by the sat phone. I think he called it modern and exotic. Check out the screen caps from when he was trying to use it. The phone's screen shows a world map that seems to indicate the location (through GPS?) as southwest of the California coast.

Last but not least, it seems that Jack and Juliet have a plan. Maybe he's not as guilable as everyone thinks.

The screen caps from the previews show some pretty intersting things. Lots of Dharma stuff, but also what appears to be the ghost of a teenage girl and some kind of voodoo stick...Check it out.
