The Economist - 02/14

Ben lives and Locke is nuckin futs!

Great episode. So much info, so many new questions...

Sayid is number 4 of 6 and he's an assassin in his flash forward. An assassin who's working for Ben. I knew that little weasel would not go gentle into that goodnight.

And did you see Ben's little secret stash in Otherton? All kinds of clothes plus stacks of money and passports. This guy is connected. It's no wonder he gets away.

Ben is obviously using Sayid to exact a little revenge in the flash forward. As he's patching him up he says "These people don't deserve our sympathy. Do I need to remind you what happened the last time when you fought with your heart instead of your gun?" Sayid says "You used that to recruit me to kill for you." Then Ben asks him "Do you want to protect your friends or not?" . Sounds like Ben's got him over a barrel. It also sounds like there are still some Losties on the island.

Enough about them for now, how about Locke, is he crazy or what? He didn't look too happy at all when he reached the circle of ash and there was no cabin in sight. I've got to admit though, he did a pretty fair job catching Sayid, Kate and Miles. The Hurley trap was a master stroke. I never for a second doubted that they had left him behind, especially after he confronts Locke about taking hostages. No wonder Hurley apologizes to Jack later.

Faraday didn't look too happy either when he finally received his "payload". The clock on his device said 02:45:03, the clock from the missle said 03:16:23. That would appear to be a difference of  31 minutes and 23 seconds. The ship's radar thought it had reached the target long before it did, it seemed like maybe 30 seconds from ship to target. Is the island moving? Nah, that wouldn't account for the different times on the clocks.

That's it for tonight, we'll pick this up again tomorrow. Check out the new screen caps that are up in the meantime.

The Economist - After a day to chew on it...

I'm still hung up on that damn missle. With all that happened in this episode, my brain keeps coming back to the missle.

According to Regina, the woman on the ship, it should have hit target in under 30 seconds. Her first mark was at 40km to the beacon, so the ship (or firing platform) can't be that far away. Let's say 60km at the most. Missilles fly pretty quickly, so where was it for 31 minutes and change?

One idea is that if island time is truly behind "normal time", then even though the missle reached the target area in 30 seconds as far as Regina was concerned, it wouldn't appear to the people on the island until that moment actually happened in their time, 31.23 minutes later.

So, does that mean that island time is 31.23 minutes behind normal time? I don't know, but it's possible. It could also be that the spot Daniel is at is 31.23 minutes behind, and other parts of the island are even further behind, or ahead. Or maybe it's just that the island's magnetic anomalies have messed with Daniel's clock and the rocket's guidance package. It could have been looping the area awaiting reacquisition of target. The only problem with this theory is that a missle that small probably wouldn't be capable of anywhere near 30 minutes of flight time.

That's gonna clog me up for a while...

Moving on, it would appear that both Naomi and Elsa share the same taste in jewelry. Check out the pictures on the screen cap page. Naomi's has an inscription: "N. I'll always be with you. R.G." (or C, my eyes aren't what they used to be). Maybe they both shop at the same stores, but I'd be willing to bet they have some significance in relation to their cause, or employer. We saw last season that Naomi had an interesting tattoo on her arm also. Check it out here. Keep your eyes open, I'm sure we'll be seeing more of both in the coming weeks.

We've still got a lot to cover. Hurley's betrayal, the Miles trade, Kate and Sawyer, Sayid and Desmond leaving in the chopper. So many things, so little time.

Tune back in tomorrow and we'll pick up where we left off.

The Economist - Chew, day two.

I'm still surprised Hurley bought into Locke's plan to capture whoever came for Charlotte. When he questioned Locke earlier in the episode about holding Charlotte hostage I thought we might see him leave, that's why I wasn't surprised to see him tied up and left behind at the barracks. Hurley's in deep now, and the "other" Losties will have a hard time trusting him after this.

That's what makes figuring out the last two of the Oceanic 6 so hard. So far we've got Jack on the beach, Sayid on the freighter and Hurley and Kate at the barracks. What brings them all back together?

Speaking of Kate, I was not surprised by that development. From the minute Jack suggested she go I knew it was going to happen. She's cares about Sawyer and she can't be to optimistic about a happy ending back home. I have a feeling Jack knew that too and was giving her a chance to change her mind.

One thing that was evident after Sawyer and Kate talked was that Ben is still a master at knowing just which loose board to pry up in someones mind to get them doubting themselves. He was dead on with his comments to Sawyer about not being able to cut it back home, not being able to compete for the woman he loves (and he does love her, make no mistake) with the likes of Jack. The man is an evil genius.

So for now, Kate's an "other" Lostie. Now there's a group whose dynanmic is about to ratchet up a few notches. That's because John Locke has just made the worst trade of the century. Now he's not only got Ben to listen too, he's also got Miles. He better gag and truss the two of them fast.

Meanwhile back at the beach, Charlotte and Daniel decide to stay behind on the island when the helicopter leaves. Ah, true geeks. The siren song of untold amazing discoveries in this strange land holds them firmly in place. You gotta love Daniel. His antics when he decides to run his test, the herky jerky way he asks permission from Frank to use the radio, a masterful performance. He captures the introverted, focused on nothing but the project scientist perfectly.

Tell you what, if the Losties want to get any real information out of the Freighter Four, he'd be the guy that would give it up. As a matter of fact, aren't Jack and Juliet alone with him now?

So that leaves room for two in the chopper and those spaces are filled by Desmond, and at Sayids suggestion, the body of Naomi. Desmond goes because he wants to get to the bottom of why Naomi had the picture of Penelope and him with her. When he gets to the ship he just may find out that it was sent by Penelope's father and not her.

I'm anxious to see the freigther and crew myself. This should be interesting.
