Sporting Collectibles is a home-based hobby/business specializing in repair, refinishing, and restoring cane (bamboo) fishing rods. This same service is also rendered to Fiber-glass and Graphite rods.
We also buy, sell, and trade, used cane rods, parts, pieces, and basket cases and come up with some very interesting concoctions. Among them are converting 9' 3piece fly rods to 6'10" without ruining the integrity of the original rods. We have done this with a few Paynes and Leonards. We also produce 6'10" Banty fly rods out of 9'- 3pc mid and tip sections with a conversion handle and 5' to 6' mini spin rod from mids and tips.

| PLEASE-- DO NOT email me " that you found your grandfather's bamboo rod in the attic, what is it worth " ??? I cannot possibly evaluate the rod's worth without actually seeing it. If you are really interested in the rod's value, and not just to see what you might get on e-bay, I will be happy to evaluate the rod if you send the properly packaged, insured rod, including return postage, and a fee of $10 ( ten ) for the first rod, and $5 (five) for each additional rod. This is the only way to give you an accurate and honest evaluation of your rod and accessories. Thank you for your understanding. |
Michael LonguilMike Longuil built his first cane fly rod and tied his first trout fly in 1948 as a student under the tutelege of the legendary Ray Bergman. He has been an avid fisherman and fishing tackle maker ever since.
His professional life (32 years) was spent as a Sr. highschool Industrial Arts instructor where hunting and fishing were incorporated into his curriculun. Throughout the fiberglass and graphite period, he, his students and friends made many varied types.
Upon his retirement, his interest in cane rods was rekindered, and Sporting Collectibles became a reality.
He also contributes fishing tackle to the New Jersey Elks camp Moore, a summer camp for disabled children in Haskell, N.J., and to Camp Venture, a camp for disabled adults in Sparkill, N.Y.. Contributions to these groups is greatly appreciated.
Mike Longuil is a member of Trout Unlimited (Ray Bergman chapter), National Fishing Lure Collectors Club, and The National Rifle Association. He has restoration work displayed in the International Game Fish Associations new museum in Dania, Florida.
The late 1930's through the 1960,s were the golden age of cane rods. The names Leonard, Payne, Garrison, Gillum, Granger and a few others are spoken of with great reverence, both in the quality of their work and and the prices being paid for their rods in todays collectible market.
There is a growing demand for moderately priced used cane rods for the average fisherman who wants to fish with a cane rod, but cannot afford a new or highly collectible rod - thus, we have Sporting Collectibles, where rods range in price for refinished rods from $75.00 and up, used rods needing work - $30.00 and up, and stripped-down rods ready to wrap - $35.00 and up.
We are located in Pearl River, N.Y., 20 miles NorthWest of N.Y. city on the New Jersey border, 7 miles from the Tappan Zee bridge, 3 miles East of the Garden State parkway, and 3 miles West of the Palisades parkway.
