The New Castle Soap Box Derby was started just four
years ago. The Rapid Tappets of New Castle started the organization with the intention of bring this long forgotten
American tradition back to New Castle. The New Castle Soap Box Derby covers four counties in Western Pa. They are Mercer,
Butler, Beaver and Lawrence. For the past four years, the race has been held on West Washington Street during Memorial Day
weekend. The past champions from New Castle are in 2000 Stephan Rohde (Stock), 2001 Seth McMillin (Stock) and Rochelle Gallaher
(Super Stock), 2002 Heather McQuiston (Stock) and Loralei Gallaher (Super Stock) and in 2003 Nick Sibeto (Stock) and Seth
McMillin (Super Stock). In the past four years two New Castle local champs have placed at the world finals: Seth McMillin
(2001) took 5th place in Stock and Nick Sibeto (2003) took 1st place in Stock. Nick Sibeto became the first World Champion
to come from Western Pa.The New Castle Soap Box Derby is looking forward to its 5th year of racing and has changed the race
date to June 19, 2004. Boys and Girls age 8-17 are eligible to compete. If you are interested in racing.
