Home Author Characters Prior Book Next Book Connie's adventures begin just two months after graduating from Meadowbrook High with her twin sister, Kit. Elizabeth Easton, the twins’ 28-year-old Aunt Bet, a Campion’s executive, hires Connie for a two-week stint as a model at the fashionable Campion's department store. Aunt Bet invites Connie to share her tiny, center-city apartment and introduces her to Larry Stewart, who works in the display department at Campion's. On her first day of work, she finds a stock girl crying in the models' dressing room. While comforting the girl, Grace, and trying to ask her why she was upset, Connie learns that they share the same last name. Grace Blair gets Connie to promise not to tell anyone that she was in the dressing room. Later, Connie meets Mr. Kurt, an obsequious floorwalker.
Soon after taking the job, she learns that merchandise is mysteriously disappearing and then reappearing in odd places at the store. While on a date with Larry, Connie mentions that she would like to stay here in Philadelphia and get a job at an advertising agency. After their date, Larry and Connie return to her aunt's empty apartment to find it ransacked, but later they discover that the intruder had taken nothing. Later, Connie's aunt is suspected of stealing a valuable pearl choker and she sets out to clear her aunt's reputation and keep her from losing her job. While on the trail, Connie helps to uncover a couple of crooks, who are smuggling stolen jewels and replacing them with paste imitations. After solving the mystery, Larry tells Connie that he has set up an interview for her at an advertising agency.
