Spreading the word
The official launch of People for Children was in Puerto Rico
on May 26, 2004. Public sevice announcements recorded by Ricky
in both Spanish and English were shown on Puerto Rican and American
television stations. Ricky was interviewed by Matt Lauer on the
Today Show in NYC on June 4, 2004. His purpose was not to perform
but rather to inform the public about the mission of the project.
In October, Martin visited the
United Nations to meet with global ambassadors and deliver a
speech about the plight of children who are the victims of sexual
exploitation and trafficking. He characterized it as a "war"
and "a battle we need to win."
Following the December, 2004
tsunami, Ricky visited the youngest victims in make-shift orphanages
and hospitals in Thailand. At present the Foundation is seeking
to rebuild homes and schools for children orphaned by the catastrophe.
Donations by individuals can be made directly to the Ricky Martin
Foundation.
