Ricky Martin Foundation

People for Children is a project of the Ricky Martin Foundation which was founded in 1997. The goals of People for Children are educating and informing the public about the exploitation of children. The organization is also active in monitoring and and combating forced labor, modern day slavery and trafficking in children.

The project funds programs designed to eliminate these problems and provide assistance to their victims. The Foundation has also supported the SER center in Aibonito, Puerto Rico as well as the Centros Sor Isolina Ferre
in Ponce, Puerto Rico.

Spreading the word

The official launch of People for Children was in Puerto Rico on May 26, 2004. Public sevice announcements recorded by Ricky in both Spanish and English were shown on Puerto Rican and American television stations. Ricky was interviewed by Matt Lauer on the Today Show in NYC on June 4, 2004. His purpose was not to perform but rather to inform the public about the mission of the project.

In October, Martin visited the United Nations to meet with global ambassadors and deliver a speech about the plight of children who are the victims of sexual exploitation and trafficking. He characterized it as a "war" and "a battle we need to win."

Following the December, 2004 tsunami, Ricky visited the youngest victims in make-shift orphanages and hospitals in Thailand. At present the Foundation is seeking to rebuild homes and schools for children orphaned by the catastrophe. Donations by individuals can be made directly to the Ricky Martin Foundation.
