Not a great Picture.....

Let me introduce myself... I am Norm Chapman, and I am the Director of Music Ministries (DMM) at Word of God Parish.  A Pittsburgh native, raised in the former 8th U.P. Church (now a part of the Riverview Presbyterian Church), I began music ministry playing for Riverview's Youth Sundays in the late 1970s - a pretty awesome experience for someone in their early teens to play services for a congregation of nearly 300.

In 1981, I became organist at the Providence Presbyterian Church on Pittsburgh's North Side - a wonderful, caring faith community that was led for over 20 years by the Rev. Donald & Christiane Dutton.  The church has a small (11-14 ranks, I think) Mohler pipe organ - believed to be one of the original organs donated to area churches by Philanthropist Andrew Carnegie.  Providence closed a few years ago and the building was sold to another congregation.  I am not sure if the organ is still in use.... (Note to self: find out!)

In January 1985, I became Director of Music at the Emanuel's Lutheran Church in Bellevue, PA.  During those years I gained tremendous experience directing choirs.  One of my long-lasting accomplishments while at Emanuel's was the coordination of the first ChoirFest in 1986.  This now yearly event combines the talents of many North Boros churches for an afternoon of praise.  The event regularly features over 100 singers from many area churches.

After 4 successful years at Emanuel's, I moved to neighboring Trinity Lutheran Church in Avalon, PA.  During these years (1989-98), the music ministry grew with the addition of Handbells and a Contemporary group (sound familiar?)  Trinity became one of the most vibrant music ministries in the North Boros.  For 8 of those years, I had the privilege of learning Liturgy from our Pastor, the Rev. John Haeberle.

To be honest, I owe much of my success as a Musician to my parents.  My mother has always been an incredible source of support and encouragement.  Unfortunately, my father passed away in 1985 but I frequently feel his presence as I play the Music of God.
