North Stars After-school Arts Program

This unique, performance-based after-school arts program for teens is distinguished by its brilliant team of artist-instructors: Lead artist and poet Trapeta Mayson, jazz guitarist Monnette Sudler-Honesty, dance choreographer LaTonya Grant, African masquerade artist and drummer Ira Bond, the Twin Poets of Def Poetry Jam, and videographer Rashid Zakat.  In its seventh year, the North Stars program uses social history as a text to provide content for the expressive arts.  Students learn to perform.  North Starts teaches leadership, activism, social skills, and literacy.  Classes lead to a not-to-be-missed original multimedia theater production in May.

The North Stars program includes:

  • Poetry and Spoken Word
  • Music – singing and instrumental
  • Dance – hip-hop, modern, step, tap, and African
  • African Enrichment - West African Dance, Masquerade Drumming, Shekere, and Stilt Walking
  • Video – Documentary and editing
  • New this year: The Art of Blogging
