About Us

Our Mission

Art Sanctuary is a nonprofit 501 (c) (3) African-American arts and letters organization founded in June 1998 by author and educator Lorene Cary to use the power of black art to transform individuals, unite groups of people, and enrich and draw inspiration from the inner city. We invite established and aspiring artists to help create lectures, performances and educational programs. Programming is based at the Church of the Advocate, a National Historic Landmark in the heart of North Philadelphia at 1801 West Diamond Street.
