Why was PolicySite Created?Public policymaking is a messy business. It involves lots of players and many interests. Policy analysts try to determine what constitutes "good policy" based upon generally-accepted economic principles. But policymaking is not an academic exercise. Social values and politics are critical to the decision-making process. When the Congress and the President make policy, they are inundated with information, data, and influence from a wide variety of sources. A great deal of that material is available on the World Wide Web. However, most web sites focus solely on their own data and work and the work of like-minded organizations. PolicySite attempts to facilitate access to a balanced and representative sample of perspectives on major areas of public policy. We frame issues by identifying the arguments of opposing sides, then linking PolicySite users to the organizations and institutions that are part of the debate. Our approach is intended to provide you with a flavor of debate and to help get you started on your own investigation of the issues. We do not claim to be comprehensive in our issue coverage, summaries of arguments, or linkages. Our intent is to provide a base from which your own search for information, data, and views can start. Our selections of links reflects our assessment of the credibility of its source and its substantive relevance to the debate.
