The Fort Greene SNAP is a non-profit organization that depends on donations from individuals and organizations to survive. Please help us continue to serve the needs of the Fort Greene community by making a small donation.

Fort Greene is a vibrant community, yet despite the presence of a wealth of institutions and a sizeable middle class, Fort Greene is still home to a large population living in poverty, without access to or knowledge of the community's resources, struggling with problems of health, unemployment, poor housing conditions, rising housing costs, barriers to quality education, and faced with a lack of opportunities for economic growth and self-sufficiency.

Available data indicates that:

24,752 or 26% of the residents are unemployed;
22.64% of total households are receiving public assistance;
34.1% of residents did not possess a high school diploma.

For nearly 5,000 families in the area's three public housing project the average gross income in 2003 was $12,248.

Sponsorship Opportunities 

There are a number of different and exciting ways you or your employer can support the great work of Fort Greene SNAP in the community.  Take a look:

• $3500 pays our rent for one month, allowing computer access for over 300 residents in that time. Our registered participant list recently hit the 3000 mark.
• $2000 will help 8 families participate in our Tech for All project, where we help them refurbish a donated computer, and then train them to use it to enhance their employment and education opportunities.
• $1000 will support 25 unemployed neighbors with resume help and other job search assistance over the course of a year. Recent reports show that in New York City, in our present economy, it takes an individual an average of 4 months to find employment.
• $600 will help SNAP maintain our DSL Internet connection for one year. Of the 50 or more participants per week who use our computer lab, 78% use the internet to access email, search for jobs, and research resources. Our records show that most of our participants don't own a computer or have access to one at home.
• $1,000 will help SNAP increase its presence on the Internet by supporting our efforts to maintain our website for six months, making it easier for us to reach supporters, potential donors, and most importantly, the communities we serve.
