The BUNDERGROUND
The BUNDERGROUND is the system of contacts, rescue organizations,
and shelters locally and nationwide that gets alerted when there are emergency placements needed for a large number of rabbits
all at once and/or for rabbits that are in danger of being imminently euthanized are being neglected or abused, and/or are
threatened in any way. A seizure of 50 rabbits from a collector on a cruelty charge or a shelter who would have to make
space for new incoming rabbits would be examples. In the case of a seizure, the rabbits would be placed in a shelter until
the legal issues were sorted out, and if not reclaimed on appeal, would face being put to death. At that point, local rabbit
organizations get involved to make emergency arrangements for them.
What is often needed in these situations is someone
to transport a rabbit to the next railroad stop and then that next person to transport to the next stop until the rabbit is
placed in a safe living situation. Stops are usually within a 50 mile range but it is in this manner that the rabbits get
moved to safety across the country if necessary. Also needed are places for rabbits to stay overnight or a few days until
the next transporter can arrange their schedule to get the rabbits.
If you can give some of your time and caring to
help the rescuers help the rabbits, please contact RabbitWise® and we will get you signed up. Your information will not be
released to the public but will be given to members of rescue organizations when there is a need.
Concerned that you
do not know enough about rabbits? RabbitWise® will give you a crash course in Rabbitiology I: the Basic Care and Behavior
of Companion rabbits. RabbitWise® will also assign a mentor to you so that the answers to your rabbit questions are just a
phone call away.
PLEASE HELP A RABBIT IN DIRE NEED.
Feel that you need to learn more about rabbits to participate? E-mail us and we will arrange an emergency Rabbitology course
and someone to mentor you.
Mentoring Program
Do you know
a lot about rabbits? Want to share your knowledge with new rabbit people? Can you help teach home care for a sick or geriatric
rabbit to his/her rabbit guardian? Can you help to support a new rabbit guardian, a new foster rabbit caretaker, or someone
providing BUNDERGROUND services to rescued rabbits? Become a RabbitWise® Mentor by signing up for the RabbitWise® Mentoring
Program. Training, as needed, is provided.
Publicity and Promotions
There
are various local pet expos and campaigns that we participate in because we love making a good showing for the rabbits. Get
your RabbitWise tee-shirt and come volunteer with us to set up, tear down, handout educational literature, or talk with people
interested in knowing more about rabbits. Check the calendar for our next event and sign up.
Love to write and have
an idea or draft of a rabbit related article? Submit it for consideration to be run in The Metro Rabbit News by e-mailing
it to RabbitWise.

Advocacy
From time to time
there are egregious acts committed against rabbits as a group. The rabbit community needs to mobilize as a united voice to
protest mistreatment, neglect, abuse and misrepresentation of our lapin friends.
When an alert comes out, become an
armchair activist. Write letters to your state, local, and national congressional representatives to support positive legislation
pertaining to rabbits; write letters of protest to offending companies; write letters to the editor to give the alternative
view; call in to radio talk show programs.
When shopping, refuse to buy cosmetics and household products tested on
rabbits, rabbit meat, and items made of rabbit fur. Tell the salespeople WHY you will not purchase their products. Keep RabbitWise
advised of your activities and we will report to the community in The Metro Rabbit News. RabbitWise will keep you posted on
how to RAISE A RUCKUS FOR THE RABBITS!
