Many of us animal lovers live in families where there is more than one species of companion animal. Many of us advocate for animals that are not companion animals. Many non-rabbit rescue organizations lend a helping hand when there are multiple rabbits in desperate need of a home, when they can find ways to support rabbit organizations, and when they can advocate for rabbits. Below are links to other organizations that have been helpful to us, or can be helpful to the non-human, non-rabbit members of your family, or to the other species that you care about.

ORGANIZATIONS FOR SEVERAL SPECIES OF ANIMALS

Animal Rescue, Inc. rescues stray dogs and cats in the north Baltimore, Maryland, and York, Pennsylvania areas.

Best Friends Animal Sanctuary houses and cares for many different species of abused and abandoned animals.

Friends of Homeless Animals in Northern Virginia helps homeless cats and dogs.

The Homeless Animal Rescue Team in Fairfax Station, VA, takes in abused and abandoned cats and dogs, resocializes them, and finds them new homes.

PAL is a Washington, DC, based organization that "brings people and animals together, brightening the lives of the lonely, easing the pain of the sick and enriching the world of at-risk children."

ORGANIZATIONS FOR BIRDS

Phoenix Landing, is a parrot rescue, adoption, and welfare organization in Arlington, VA.

9-1-1 PARROT ALERT :  An International Group of volunteers, dedicated to helping reunite Lost, Found or Stolen companion birds with their families.   Web site:   http://www.911ParrotAlert.com

ORGANIZATIONS FOR CATS

Alley Cat Allies trap, neuter, and return feral cats. They are located in Washington. DC.

The Feline Foundation of Greater Washington rescues, cares for, and finds homes for abandoned cats and kittens.

Dogs Deserve Better helps dogs chained outside.

ORGANIZATIONS FOR FARM ANIMALS

The Farm Animal Reform Movement, located in Bethesda, MD, advocates for farm animals.

Poplar Spring Santuary in Poolesville, MD, provides rescue and santuary for farm animals and wildlife.

ORGANIZATIONS FOR FISH

ORGANIZATIONS FOR GUINEA PIGS, HAMSTERS, FERRETS, MICE, AND RATS

Metropolitan Guinea Pig Rescue in Northern Virginia: Rescues guinea pigs, educates the public about their proper care, has guinea pigs available for adoption.

Small Angels is a foster network for gerbils, guinea pigs, hamsters, mice, and rats in Frederick, MD. Contact Angela Pfeiffer at (301) 668-3117 or apfeiffer@copper.net.

ORGANIZATIONS FOR HORSES

The American Horse Defense Fund advocates for wild as well as companion horses. Because of AHDF, horses have a lawyer.

Days End Farm Horse Rescue provides quality care for abused and neglected horses. The farm is located in Lisbon, MD.

ORGANIZATIONS FOR PIGS

Pigs, a sanctuary where a "pig can be a pig," is located in Shepherdstown, WVA. The sanctuary is also home to horses, goats, the occasional rabbit, and other species.

The Willow Ridge Sanctuary is home to abused and abandoned pigs, a couple of burros, a goat, a rooster, and other assorted animals. It is located in Willow Street, PA.

ORGANIZATIONS FOR REPTILES AND AMPHIBIANS

Northern Virginia Reptile Rescue in Bluemont, VA.

Turtle Homes is an international organization that helps injured and homeless turtles.

ORGANIATIONS FOR WILDLIFE

 

 

Second Chance Wildlife Center in Gaithersburg, MD, cares "for injured, ill, and orphaned wildlife from Montgomery County, MD, and the surrounding areas."

The Wildlife Rescue League of provides care for sick, injured, or orphaned wildlife so that the animal can be returned to the wild. Their service area is DC and Northern Virginia.

If you know of a great animal organization that should be on this list, tell us about it and we will consider it for inclusion . They should be non-profit organizations that have animal welfare as their top priority.
