Early American War Heroes
Sorry, this page is still under construction. I hope to be able to provide brief biographies of ancestors who were distinguished American patriots.
A few of the relatives of interest include Captain Thomas Emerson, Lieutenant Samuel Gray, Captain Ebenezer Church, and Colonel Thomas Parker.
GENERAL JOSEPH CILLEY
General Joseph Cilley was engaged in the attack on Fort William and Mary in 1774; and appointed a Major in Colonel Poor's regiment by the Assembly of New Hampshire in 1775. He was not present at the Battle of Bunker Hill as his regiment was engaged in home defense. He was made Lieutenant Colonel in 1776 and on April 2, 1777, was appointed Colonel of the First New Hampshire regiment of three years' men, in place of Colonel Stark, resigned. He was at Bemis Heights and at the surrender of Burgoyne. He was at Valley Forge the winter of 1777-1778, at the storming of Stoney Point; at Monmouth he was one of the heroes in retrieving General Lee's retreat. He was present at the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown, and served in other battles of the American Revolution.
