William was the son of William and Alice Nickerson and was a tailor apprentice to his father in 1621 and was admitted a worsted weaver and freeman in Norwich 5/18/1632. He and his family sailed from Yarmouth, England 4/15/1637 on the ship John and Dorothy, arriving at Salem, MA 6/20/1637. Early settlement is not known, but he moved to Yarmouth, MA in 1641. He first bought land from the Indain Sagamore Mattaquason in 1656 and a few years later moved from Yarmouth with his children's families to begin the settlement of the present Chatham in the area which is now Chartham Port.

Before 1677 William, Jr. owned land east of Great Hill, Monomoit and another lying southwest of the head of Ryder's Cove where he probably lived. But it 1689 he bought land at Cotchpinicut (Old Harbor) where he built a house and resided for some time. He took the oath of a freeman in 1690 and was a soldier in King Philip's War. As an active participant in village affairs, he served as grandjuryman, constable, inspector of whales, selectman, and was the first village treasurer and clerk. His wife Mercy lived to between 90 and 95 years and died at Chatham, MA

Comments:
      It may be thought that the Nickersons moved to Canada prior to the American Revolution due to their sympathies with the Crown. However, during the period 1758-1760 the reasons were probably economic, not political. There was a strong incentive for the Nickersons to move to Nova Scotia. After the expulsion of the Acadians, the British Government was anxious to attract settlers to the lands they had vacated. In 1758 Gov. Lawrence issued a proclamation and offered immigrants transportation, free farms, and partial support until their crops were under way. Cape Cod fishermen were accustomed to this area where fish were plentiful, and found the offer very tempting. Also, a number of Cape Cod men had become acquainted with the area through their military service there. Families from all along the eastern shores of Massachusetts accepted the terms, and from 1760 to 1763 over fifty families from Chatham alone emigrated to that region -- primarily to Liverpool and Barrington. The History of Chatham lists those who went in 1760. Nickersons included were Ebenezer, Jr., Jonathan, Elkanah, Daniel, Nathan, William 3rd, James, Elisha, and Elisha, Jr. -- to Liverpool; Caleb, Prince, Richard and Joshua, borthers. Eldad and Stephan, half-brothers -- to Barrington.
