Clinical Facilities - VA Medical Center, Huntington, WV

The Eye Clinic

The Eye Clinic underwent an expansion and overall renovation project in the Summer of 2009.  The clinic is now comprised of twelve examination rooms, specialized testing and photography rooms, a fully-staffed optical, staff and resident offices and a large conference room with projection and teleconferencing equipment.  All examination rooms are equipped with slit lamps, BIOs, hand-held diagnostic instruments as well as auto-refractors and auto-lensometers.

The Medical Center, including the Eye Clinic, started using a centralized electronic medical record system in 1997.  This allows for access to any patient's medical record from any workstation in the Medical Center as well as from any VA Medical Center in the Country.  The electronic record system encompasses all aspects of patient care including medications, labs, consultation and special testing orders, as well we all forms of imaging such as CTs, chest X-rays, and carotid ultrasounds.  Of particular importance to the Eye Clinic, the medical chart includes ALL ophthalmic imaging allowing for a completely paperless clinical environment.  In addition to clinical examination records, all photos and fluorescein angiograms, visual fields, OCTs and ultrasound images are digital and part of each patient's medical chart.  This highly-sophisticated system dramatically enhances clinical efficiency and the overall quality of care provided to veterans.

The Medical Center

The Veterans Administration Medical Center in Huntington provides acute medical, surgical, and rehabilitative inpatient care, intermediate inpatient care, and both primary and specialized outpatient services, including a mental hygiene clinic. This Medical Center is the principal teaching facility for the Marshall University School of Medicine for undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. Research activities at the Medical Center have markedly increased; current annual VA funding plus extra VA funding is in excess of $1 million. In addition, the Medical Center is designated as the Clinic of Jurisdiction for the state of West Virginia. Extensive use of community resources, as well as community nursing homes for post-hospitalization care, complement our Medical Center's treatment programs. The Huntington staff is a dedicated group whose motto "we choose to care" is reflected in patient care and is evident in numerous community activities. The Medical Center opened a new Clinical Addition in September 1992, doubling the amount of clinical and patient care areas. The $50 million Robert C. Byrd Clinical Addition increased operating bed capacity from 180 to 247 beds.  New clinical programs were created, e.g., cardiac catheterization and inpatient psychiatric care plus enhancements and expansion of existing clinical programs occurred as a result of the addition.
