What is Net 261?

FidoNet Dog

FidoNet Net-261 covers Central and Eastern Maryland and consists of several Bulletin Board Systems on the eastern and western shore areas of the state

File distribution is also a part of FidoNet.

FidoNet is a non-commercial mail network available on Bulletin Board Systems around the world. It was created in 1984 when a System Operator named Tom Jennings began work on his BBS software, called Fido. He built a simple message exchange capability into Fido to exchange debugging information with a friend in Baltimore who was also testing the BBS software. As they continued to exchange messages and debug Fido, word spread quickly about the BBS that could "network." By August of 1984 there were thirty systems exchanging messages and by the following February it had grown to 160+. By late 1985 there were so many nodes that they began to organize into local networks and FidoNet was born. Today it consists of over 29,000 BBS Systems worldwide with megabytes of mail being delivered daily on over 600 topics.
