Starkweather studied in the Academie Colarossi, Paris; also with Joaquin Sorolla in Madrid; and at the Art Students League in New York with John Henry Twachtman. He was a prolific, exhibiting artist and a member of the Society of Independent Artists with John Sloan, Ernest Lawson and George Bellows. He was also a member of the American Watercolor Society, Salmagundi Club, New York Watercolor Club and the Allied Artists of America. Edward Hopper, William Glackens and William Starkweather were neighbors and painted many of the same locations. Luigi Lucioni, Paul Cadmus and Wilfred Conrow were some of Starkweather's students. Starkweather taught at Cooper Union,
Hunter College, Pratt Institute and The Traphagen School of Design. Starkweather's paintings are in the collection
of the Metropolitan Museum, Brooklyn Museum, San Diego Museum, Hickory Museum, Tides Institute, Yale University and the Hispanic Society of America. Starkweather published books about John Singer Sargent and Francisco Goya. He was also a book cover designer and illustrator
with over 40 books to his credit. Starkweather wrote many articles for journals, especially in The Mentor Magazine. There
was a Starkweather Museum in Endless Caverns, New Market, Va. A major retrospective of his work was organized
by Anthony Panzera in the Hickory Museum, North Carolina and at Hunter College in New York City which published
catalogs about his life and works.
In March of 2011, there was an exhibition of books, articles and ephemera of William Starkweather at the Northport, N.Y, Public
Library.
