These are some of the guys who were wailin' when I was studying in the early 60's, i.e.
Trane, Bird, Monk, etc., the JAZZMASTERS!

Wish I had taken better advantage of studying keys under Bob Hores (Sax guy) while
I was playing with him for a year and a half. He sat with me for months, trying to teach me progressions and extensions
so I could comp adequately for him... but I'm afraid he was more serious about it than I.
Bob took us to hear Horace Silver at Abart's in DC and told me that's what he wanted from me
on our tour. RIGHT! I'm doing Scott Joplin, and he wants Horace Silver. HA! Sorry Bob!

Dr. Hores went on to teach at Berklee after our tour, and... I played gigs, with several local combos,
like Robbie's Band, and buried my axe in '73 . . .

Karl's sister, Kate Hamburger, was our next door neighbor
in Castanea PA. They, and their brother John, were raised up at the Keller Reservoir house on Nittany Road. I first heard Karl
play at the Irvin House in Lock Haven when he was up from Fla once. Karl & Mary played atop Pier 66 for
many years, as well as U.S. tours.

I
wonder if they still drive with only parking lights at night in Rio? How cool. I suppose the bars I visited in the 60's are no longer there, the Orchid Room, Cervantes,
Anapolis, etc. Colombo's is still there though! It's been a long time since I sat on Copacabana Beach, and strolled through Ipanema. Rio
was as beautiful then as their bossa nova is now. We played a gig for US & Brazilian diplomats in Rio, very
nice.
