Does this look distorted to you? It always seemed that way to me too - inside and out! I really liked
LHHS, especially between Friday and Monday! What I liked most about LHHS was cutting it to go to the pool-room, Luigi's, Greco's
and The Sputnik shop! Remember Big Red & Abby? Didn't they make Algebra fun?

Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania is probably one of the largest employers remaining in Lock Haven PA since I left town. When I lived there they had many large employers, e.g. the Piper Aircraft Corporation, the New
York & Pennsylvania Company paper mills at Castanea and Lock Haven, the American Analine dye works, the R. K. Griffin chair factory, the fire brick
works, the Bloomsburg Mills silk mill, the Pennwoven wire mill, Clark printing company, Sylvania in Mill Hall, Jersey
Shore Steel Mill in Avis, Drake Chemical and Crissman Meat Packing Plant in Castanea, Woolrich Woolen Mills, etc. Now,
I think it's pretty much a college town.

Actually I lived in Castanea PA, adjacent to Lock Haven. The old timers pronounced it Casteena. They told me it means Chestnut, and it was named that because of all of the native Chestnut trees on Bald Eagle Mountain. Here's a few pix from Castanea:
My Grandfather, John Sylvester Poorman, built our house at 15 E. Brown St., and Dad finished it off when he and Mom moved
in after Grandfather died. Gram moved back to Jessamine Street in Lock Haven.
|
This is the Castanea train station, about two blocks from our house. We used to play around it when we were kids,
e.g. putting pennies on the track for trains to squash them.
|
| Castanea Fire Company |

|
We used to go to carnivals and circuses at the Castanea Fire House. I remember the medicine show (and the
side shows) HA!
|
I used to enjoy watching the Piper planes take off and land in my back yard when I lived on Island Route by the
airport in Castanea Twp.
|
| Lucas Brewery |

|
| Nittany Rd, Castanea PA |
We used to play in the old brewery. There was a big old safe on the second floor that we always tried to break
into trying different combinations. HA!

| Lucas Brewery |

|
| Castanea PA |
I tell my granddaughters stories about how we went into the dark brewery and tossed stones down into the vats to see
how long it took them to hit bottom . . . SPLASH! Moral: Don't play in brewerys, or you might fall in the vats and die!
|
| Keller Resevoirs |

|
| Kammerdiner Run |
We used to play at the Keller Resevoirs in Castanea, and hike up the Kammerdiner. Now it's a college course
for the jocks at LHU . . . HA! think we can get 3 credits? Would that be hiking 101?

CASTANEA PA - SUPERFUND SITE
So, Castanea is a big superfund site! I remember the colors in the Bald Eagle Creek - it
used to be red, green, blue, yellow . . . you know, ROYGBIV! Different color every day.

| Chief John Logan |

|
Some
interesting local history - Cayuga Chief John Logan and his brother James were prominent Native American figures in the
Lock Haven area. They travelled often throughout the Bald Eagle Valley,
Sugar Valley, Nittany
Valley and Pleasant Valley,
from Chatham Run, through McElhattan, Rosecrans, Loganton (named after James Logan), Booneville and Logan's Gap. To see more, click on the Chief's painting above.
|
| Henry W. Shoemaker |

|
Another
local celebrity: Colonel Henry Wharton Shoemaker. Col. Shoemaker’s "Restless Oaks" estate still stands in McElhattan, PA, near the
Restless Oaks Restaurant, on the road up to the McElhattan/Lock Haven Reservoir. To see more, click on the Colonel's
photo above.
