Manuscripts and printed copies of various of the speeches and articles
of Colonel Henry W. Shoemaker (b. 1882, d. 1958), diplomat, historian, author, and newspaper publisher. Shoemaker, who served
as minister of the United
States to Bulgaria,
1930-33, was chairman of the Pennsylvania Historical Commission, 1923-30; member of the Pennsylvania Geographic Board, 1924-30,
director of the Pennsylvania State Archives, 1937-48, and folklorist with the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission,
1948-55. He was for many years associated with the Altoona
Times Tribune. Items located here reflect
Shoemaker's deep interest in many areas of Pennsylvania
history and especially his dedication as a folklorist. Included are photographs, 9 items, featuring Colonel Shoemaker, the
Clarks Ferry Bridge, and various rural scenes.
