1. The search for the "model" or "concept" of a sculpture
is initiated with searching photographs.
2. The selection is based upon the ease to which
I may create that image into the medium:
steel plate or sheet (thinner).
3. That image creation becomes a "silhouette"
or a sketch, which then is scaled to a ratio
of (for example) 1/2" from the photo to
2" for the drawing to make a pattern or
template of cardboard.
Recently, I do not use a silhoutte", but rather
work from drawings which then are the basis for
the "template".
4. I cut out that template & transfer (caulk)
that image onto the de-rusted, steel plate.
5. The "nasty" work begins with the:
cutting, grinding, bending, welding
pieces to the main portion of the image.
6. Finishing that work entails more cleaning,
placing a barrier solution to prevent future
rust, spray painting many layers of
oil based paint. Pieces may be placed
to the weather & will not blow over.
Equipment includes:
MIG welder, Arc welder, oxy-acetylene
torch, Plasma Cutter, various grinders.
