In recent years I have realized that I’m focusing on the “Masks of Mankind”. Some of our other masks are race, creed, color, and sex.

I was inspired to start this sculpture by a photo of  Lenda Murray. She won the title “Ms. Olympia” six times. Originally I just wanted to create an image of a woman in a traditional man’s role. By the time I finished I knew I also wanted to eliminate the sex element; so instead of calling this ‘Ms. Olympia” I chose to call it “The Body Builder”.

I have many images to create of this ‘more perfect world’, where many traditional “masks” can be put aside. For many months I’ve been making a list of images of women in roles that are traditionally men’s. Now I realized my perspective was limited, so I’ve started to make a list of images of men in traditional ‘woman's’ roles.

My son doesn’t know it yet, but either he or I will soon appear washing dishes and taking care of the children.
