This is my favorite aria, and probably favorite song. It is a bit sad sounding I guess, but the bass voice
has always been my favorite. The aria is sung by Martti Talvela, playing the character of Sarastro. His voice is the most
powerful, sonerous bass I have heard. At 6'7" he was the tallest singer in the last century, making his priestly and
heroic roles all the more imposing. Sadly, Martti passed away in 1989, a young man of 54.
Of this aria, George bernard Shaw said the words were "worthy of the mouth of God."
