Meet New Abingdon Friends at "Last Sunday" Playdates

FANS and the Abingdon PTA will again be hosting a series of casual playground get-togethers for current and prospective Abingdon students.  Every last Sunday of the spring and summer months, from 3 to 5 p.m., future and current Abingdon families meet at the front Abingdon playground for chatting, snacking, and playing. Families are encouraged to come out and play, even if their children are far from kindergarten age.

2009 Abingon Kindergarten Orientations

Kindergarten registration at Arlington Public Schools  begins on Tuesday, Feb. 2. Registration packets and school entrance forms are  available at all elementary schools. Children who reach their fifth birthday on  or before September 30, 2009 may enter kindergarten during the 2009-2010 school  year. Orientations and tours of Abingdon, Fairlington’s neighborhood elementary  school, are set for Tuesday, Feb. 24, 9:15 a.m.; Thursday, March 12, 12:45 p.m.; and Tuesday, April 14 at 9:15 a.m. Come meet the Abingdon administrators, staff and parent volunteers that make Abingdon a great school!

Fun for the entire family! This is a great opportunity for current and future students to visit the school and meet Abingdon families. Come and enjoy these great activities: moon bounce, cake walk, games, pictures, tattoos, face painting, raffles, food, and prizes. Food Items for sale include: pizza, popcorn, chips, sodas, and more.
 

Walk & Bike to School Day 2008 | Wednesday, Oct. 8  from 7:30 a.m.

Abingdon has been chosen as the "spotlight school" for Arlington County in recognition of the school's demonstrated commitment to walking as part of a healthy lifestyle. County and APS officials will join Abingdon students and parents as they walk and bike their way to school together. Three "rest stops" will be set up throughout the neighborhood (the fire station, trailhead on S. 31st St. and the North Fairlington Community Center) and will serve juice and snacks for walkers. A rally will be held on the field in front of the school at 7:50 a.m.

Abingdon Johnny Rockets Spirit Night | Thursday, Oct. 2 from 4-9 p.m. 

Join the Abingdon School community at Johnny Rockets in Shirlington! Johnny Rockets will donate 20% of its proceeds from Abingdon families, staff, and community members to the Abingdon PTA that night.

All new and returning Abingdon students and their families are invited to attend the summer's final "FANS Last Sunday Play Date." Join us on Sunday, August 31, from 3-5 p.m. at the front Abingdon playground.  Free popsicles will be provided for everyone!  You are welcome to bring other snacks and drinks for your family or to share.  This is a great chance to reunite with old friends and to make new ones.  Meet parents and neighbors and prepare to start the 2008-2009 school year!

Spring & Summer 2008 Playdates | Last Sundays of the Month, 3-5 p.m.

Due to the success of last year’s playdate series, FANS will again be hosting a series of casual playground get-togethers for current and prospective Abingdon students.  Every last Sunday of the spring and summer months, from 3 to 5 p.m., future and current Abingdon families meet at the front Abingdon playground for chatting, snacking, and playing. Families are encouraged to come out and play, even if their children are far from kindergarten age.

The spring and summer playdate schedule is as follows:  April 27, May 25, June 29, and July 27 (always from 3 to 5 p.m.).  Last summer, FANS and the Abingdon PTA held a back-to-school potluck picnic on the last Sunday before school started.

Current and prospective Abingdon families are welcome to come enjoy Sunday afternoon together. Children can play and snack while parents have a chance to get to know each other better, exchange information, and catch up on school news.

More playdates will be held throughout the spring and summer: stay tuned for "Last Sundays 2008."

Coffee with Libby Garvey | Sunday, March 9 at 2 p.m.

Did you know that Abingdon went through another resurgence in the late 1980s?  School Board member, Fairlington resident, and former Abingdon parent, Libby Garvey, will speak to parents about this and other events in the school's more recent history on March 9 at the home of Amy and Enrico Suardi in Fairlington. Libby will also be available to answer any questions you may have about schools in general.

Libby served as volunteer coordinator at Abingdon from 1985 to 1988 and PTA president from 1990 to 1992.  Both her children graduated from Abingdon, and her grandson is now attending kindergarten there. She has served on the School Board for 11 years, and has served four terms as Chair.

Kindergarten Orientations are Here! | February - April, 2008

Abingdon Elementary School encourages all curious parents to attend any of its three official orientations over the coming months. Orientations are a great time to visit the school, meet the principal, tour the building, see the school "in action" and get a general feel for the school.

Principal of the Year, Joanne Uyeda, will start off with an introduction to the school, which is generally followed by a few words from one of the three kindergarten teachers. After the presentations, parents will break off into groups and enjoy tours of the school led by teachers.

Orientation Schedule

Tuesday, February 26: 9:15 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.
Thursday, March 13: 12:45 p.m. to 2:15 p.m.
Thursday, April 10: 9:15 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.

Orientations begin in the Abingdon Elementary School library (signs will direct the way). If you can't make any of the orientations, the principal is happy to give individual tours. Please call the school office to arrange a time (703) 228-6650.

Learn about Abingdon's Arts Integration | Tues., Oct. 23 from 6:30 - 8

Communications Teacher Kerry Abbott will be speaking at the October PTA meeting about Abingdon's involvement in CETA, Changing Education Through the Arts, sponsored by the Kennedy Center. Thanks to CETA, Abingdon teachers are using many techniques to integrate the arts into their classrooms. 

The event will begin in Ms. Abbott's classroom with a demonstration by students. (Signs with directions will be posted.) As always, FREE childcare is offered.

Celebrate the end of summer and the start of the new school year at the rear Abingdon playground. Held on the last Sunday before school starts, this casual event is a great chance for children and parents to get to know each other. Principal Talks to Fairlington Citizens' Assoc. | November 14, 2006

Abingdon's Principal, Joanne Uyeda, speaks to citizens about the school. Ms. Uyeda gives a brief orientation of the school, talking about what makes Abingdon unique. She also discusses how Abingdon has now made Annual Yearly Progress under the No Child Left Behind Act for two consecutive years.

Superintendent "Summer Chat" | July 27, 2006

Summer Chats are designed to give Arlingtonians an opportunity to talk with Arlington Superintendent Dr. Robert Smith about school-related issues and to ask questions in small, informal settings.

On July 27, Dr. Smith and Assistant Superintendent and former Abingdon Elementary School principal, Meg Tuccillo, talked with FANS and community members in a Fairlington living room.

First FANS Meeting | June 20, 2006

Current parents, prospective parents, former teachers and the school's principal all attended FANS first official meeting since its formation in April. FANS goals were discussed -- spreading the word and involving the community -- and ideas were gathered. PTA co-presidents, Colleen Weiser and Tina Masciangioli, spoke about how happy they have been with the school and their involvement with the PTA. Joanne Uyeda, Abingdon's principal, talked about the school's gifted program and how teachers use differentiated instruction to reach children at all learning levels.
