Many years ago in the historically Republican 12th Congressional District, it was never a question of whether the Republican candidate would win but how much he would win by. It was a foregone conclusion that Republican roots in the 12th District run very deep. As we all know in life things change, sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse. I am pleased to say that Letter Carriers interests and working families’ interests in general have taken a turn for the better in the 12th District.

Along with the New Jersey Letter Carrier Political Activist Program, run by our state chair Tony Massa, our brothers and sisters in the AFL-CIO and concerned constituents, have made a difference in the 12th District. I call it “Red to Blue”.

Congressman Rush Holt has a voting record on

Letter Carrier issues of 100%”.

In 1994 Republican Dick Zimmer won the election and then voted against Letter Carrier issues 85% of the time. In 1996 Republican Mike Pappas won the election and then voted against Letter Carrier issues 80% of the time. But in 1998 Democrat Rush Holt challenged Republican Dick Zimmer. The election was so close it was contested, so a recount and recheck was ordered. After weeks of recounting and rechecking, Rush Holt was declared the winner. Now, Congressman Rush Holt has a voting record on Letter Carrier issues of 100%. Like I said, “Red to Blue” is a wonderful thing.

Since 1998, Rush Holt has beaten Republican challengers Buster Soaries and then Bill Spadea. Those victories were achieved in large part by Letter Carrier’s hard work and political activism. In 2004, Rush Holt won the past election by more than 60% of the vote. Again, from “Red to Blue”.

I thank all the Letter Carriers for their efforts. It is well known throughout the AFL-CIO that the Letter Carrier political activist program is second to none. We work hard, are well informed and put in the time to make a difference.

But we must continue with our efforts. It will be an uphill struggle now and in the future. Considering the current political makeup in Washington D.C. our activism must continue to grow. Every Letter Carrier should be an E-Activist and a contributor to COLCPE. Be informed and ready for the challenges that lie ahead. I urge you to contact your legislative liaison in your district for information on issues that concern Letter Carriers and the Postal Service in general. Once again, “Red to Blue” is a wonderful thing, let’s keep it that way.
