It’s that time of year again. As the summer ends, it’s time for us to renew our efforts on the legislative front. First and foremost is Voter Registration. By now, every single letter carrier and family should be registered to vote. The deadline is 30 days before an election, making this year’s deadline to register October 7th.

If you’re not registered, you’re not doing all you can to protect your job and benefits. Remember, our contract can be totally dismantled by an unfriendly Congress. Do your part. Register and then vote for the candidates who best support our issues.

Be sure to sign up to the NALC’s E-Activist Network. You’ll get updates on every single postal and union issue that comes before the House and Senate. The NALC went to great lengths to make this a user-friendly site. You can even personalize a formatted letter to your representative, and it will also list your current Congressional Representatives. It takes all the worry out of communicating with Congress. Go to the NALC website, NALC.org or visit our web site, NJSALC.com for more information and to sign up.

" Postal Reform has cleared the U.S. House of Representatives

by a whopping 410-20 margin"

As you know by now, Postal Reform has cleared its first hurdle, the U.S. House of Representatives by a whopping 410-20 margin. There were attempts to add some anti-worker amendments to the bill (H.R. 22), but they were defeated. The Bill is now slated to go before the Senate. Please continue to monitor the above web sites and the NALC Bulletins for more current information regarding this bill. When the time comes for action you will be notified. I’d like to thank all of you who took the time to write to your representatives about Postal Reform. It shows what a concerted effort can do.

If you haven’t already done so, please donate to COLCPE, our political action fund. We must support those candidates who support our issues. If every letter carrier gave $1.00 a week, think of the resources we’d have! A buck a week isn’t much to ask. Think of it as an investment in your future. It’s easy to sign up for payroll deduction. Just go to our web site, NJSALC.com and click on the Postal Ease link.

Remember, getting involved with the legislative process is imperative. Don’t become complacent and have the attitude of “let someone else do it.” This is your job and your future depends on it. Become involved!
