Did You Know?

I'd like to plan a summer backing trip in the White Mountains if there's enough interest. There are many places to explore and many options, depending on your interests.  Hiking the AT is just one possibility. We can even skip the backpacks and hike from hut to hut, although that's expensive and would require making reservations. If you're interested, email me: mtn.man@verizon.net

In September, MMC members  spent a festive, foggy weekend climbing a shrouded Mt Lafayette, under the threat of showers, staying overnight at the Greenleaf Hut. Saturday we ascended via the Falling Waters Trail, taking the Franconia Ridge to the summit of Lafayette. The wind, as expected, was gusty along the ridge and cool enough to keep us moving at a good clip. We 50-something year olds left the weekend warriors in the dust from the very beginning and overtook everyone we met along the way.......even including a lunch break and a few stops. After a photo opportunity on Lafayette and with time to kill, we trekked down the Garfield Ridge about 3/4 hour, turning back at the slippery ledges....well past the Skookumchuck Tr. .....and ascended Lafayette again from the north. Back at the top we found shelter from the wind, taking another photo break just below the summit on the east side at a shielded spot few people are aware of.  Descending to the hut, we arrived early enough to have our choice of bunks, and there was even enough time for a short nap or hike before dinner.

The next morning, under a murky mantle, we pondered climbing Lafayette and hiking the ridge again under the threat of 50-70 m.p.h. winds and a torrential downpour predicted for the p.m. We agreed to decide at the summit, and quickly ascended Lafayette  again. Judging the warm, light wind at the summit and our early start, the ridge run would not be a foolish decision based on our experience and abilities.  But still, we hiked at a good pace; moving quickly when possible and stepping cautiously when conditions dictated. The gusty wind, much stronger than the previous day, was exhilarating.....strong enough to push us about at times, but warm, and never dangerous.  Our smiles stretched from ear to ear!

Decending the Falling Waters Tr. was slow at first on the slippery ledges;  it pays to be cautious......the climb down is always more difficult. Part way down, the foggy mist turned to light drops; more of a sprinkle than rain. It quickly passed. Soon, the beautiful water falls again drew our attention, but we continued our brisk pace trying to beat the storm. Good timing and luck was with us. Soon we were at the parking lot, stuffing our vehicles with gear when the deluge came. ....Time out for coffee at the park store!

Had we not braved the unfavorable weekend forecast, an adventure would have been squandered.  And had we surrendered to Sunday's forecast, an excellent climb up Lafayette and hike down the Franconia Ridge........under a surreal, blowing, misty, cloak.......would have been lost.  But, as experienced, well outfitted and fit hikers, we claimed a truly memorable weekend for our own.  It pays to be in shape , well informed, and to use good judgement and common sense. But, it also pays to be an adventurer!

The MMC isn't limited just to Monadnock. If you're interested in joining a group or guided hike 'most anywhere in New England.........let us know.  Jim Johnson
