Nebraska National Forest, Scott Lookout Tower

  • Nebraska National Forest -
This forest is unique in that it's the only man made forest in the United States.  The trail I did here was Scott Lookout Trail which starts near the campground on the north end and it follows a sandy path (The forest is located over top of the Sand Hills of Nebraska) through a forest of Ponderosa Pine.  It is a very, very quiet forest, I couldn't hear anything, not birds, bugs, or anything for that matter.  The trail continues on up and comes to a picnic area near an old windmill.  I had some food here and took a break, and then continued on the trail.  I finally caught site of the tower, and took a look around, and it was gorgeous.  You can see all the way until where the forest ends and it gives way to sand hills and rangeland.  The tower was closed when I got there, but there are still great views because there aren't many trees in the area.  The tower is open I think on weekdays between like 12:00 and 2:00.  I took in the views and then followed the road back for a complete 6 miles.
