The Yee Fong Toy Association’s annual
picnic on July 22, 2006 was to Keansburg Amusement Park and Runaway Rapids
Family Waterpark in Keansburg, New Jersey.
About 150 people boarded three chartered buses to a place where fun never
grows old and for creating memories that can last a lifetime. For me, this great adventure started the
night before. As organizer for this
gathering, I was concerned about the dire weather forecast that can ruin the
whole outing. I planned for
everything except for the rain.
What am I going to do with all those people at an amusement park? Nevertheless, I had confidence that all
will turn out somehow.
As I drove with my wife out to meet the group, I got a phone call from
Keansburg saying they would remain open, weather permitting. We were optimistic, as we arrived
early. The traffic was light and it
was only 60 miles away. We had
ample time to get our wristband, box lunch and to take some pictures. Then, off we all went. Suddenly, after the kids were enjoying
themselves at the waterpark for an hour, the sirens rang warning of
thunderstorms. I was amazed at
their 2-minute early warning system.
As it rained and thundered, I was told their
radar showed weather would clear up in about half an hour. Just as the rain stopped, the sun
started to shine. I was informed later that many were caught off guard, but as
New Yorkers, they made the best of what could have been worst. While the weather in most of the
surrounding areas was heavy rain, we continued to enjoy somewhat sunny
weather. This was
amazing.
I was relieved to see so many people enjoying themselves. Our President Kenneth 景新,
Advisor Shu Chan 樹燦,
John W. and David even ventured out on the beach to go salt-water fishing. From time to time, they had a small
group of followers interested in their techniques. Good thing they got some fish to show
for. The
kids were not the only ones adventurous.
I saw some parents going with their kids on some high tech thrill rides
like Double Shot, Moby Dick, Chaos and others. I am certain these will be irreplaceable
moments. For me, I joined Vice
President Gong Sum 鋼深 and Herbert on the bumper cars, go-carts, and roller
coasters. As parents, we all felt
like kids again. I also had an
opportunity to interact with many others I normally would not get to do. Like previous years, I look forward to
this day. Hope everyone can join us
next year.
