One
of the associations mission is to encourage the showing of the birds we represent. Showing is not only about competition but
provides a venue to see new species, learn about the care and nature of different species and most importantly to enjoy the
company of others that share enthusiasm and passion for softbills and finches.
After some discussion by the founding
members, it was decided rather than promote breeding of mutations, ASFA will place the natural
colored bird on a equal footing with mutations. There for mutation will
be judged in the same class as the natural colored bird. There will be no division of first year birds and older birds and
there will be no banding requirements. It was agreed that the bird must be owned for a minimum of 60 days prior to being entered
in a ASFA show. No hybrid birds will be allowed and for that reason the recently appearing "euro-society" will not be able
to be entered.
The classifications are based on
geographic divisions with finches and softbills being divided into the region they inhabit. There will be five divisions:
Softbill & Finches of Africa, Softbills & Finches of the Americas, Softbill & Finches of Australia, Softbills
& Finches of Euro-Asia, Softbills & Finches of the Indo-Pacific.
Show entries will be evaluated yearly and those birds falling into the AOV class will be added as the entries support.
