Formation and Focus

ASFA was formed by a group of softbill and finch enthusiast that wish to establish an organization that has three areas of focus. Foremost, ASFA will providing educational materials and activities about the birds we enjoy via the organization website, newsletter and meetings. The second focus will be on maintaining species in American aviculture. The third focus area will be promoting the showing of birds. Rather than delineate mutations into seperate classes, birds will compete in classes based on species and sections that are based on geographical habitat.

The Internet will be vital for the association to communicate and provide many of the services. A Web Site will be developed that will have member only access functions like forums, past newsletters, advertisements for trade or sale.

The associations publication will be in the form of a newsletter (published quarterly at minimum) that will be sent to members as a PDF file. It will also be available on the official Yahoo group forum for preview or download.

Governing of the Association

Founding members (those joining before March 1, 2006) will coordinate and direct the group for the first two years. Most decisions will be voted on initially until a formal set of by-laws are written and adopted. It is anticipated that the two year mark will be when officers are elected. Polling on the Yahoo group will allow members greater input on the direction and projects of the organizations.

Future Direction

Our first goal will be to establish Husbandry Standards of Care. As the organization grows we would like to develop a Judge Panel for ASFA affiliated shows. From the beginning it is understood that great organizations develop over time and that maintaining a process that is inclusive and enjoyable is what is strived for rather than speed and size.
