The Old Man of Suncook Island
Upper and Lower Suncook Lakes both sit at 555 feet above sea level. Together they comprise 578 acres. Lower Suncook is 216 acres with a maximum 15 foot depth while Upper Suncook is 362 acres with a maximum 41 foot depth. A significant Invasive Milfoil problem was successfully addressed during the summer of 2004 on Lower Suncook with herbicidal treatment. The Volunteer Lake Assessment is conducted each year by Carol Barrett. (Thanks Carol!) Depth goes to 41 feet and fish species include; rainbow trout, small and largemouth bass, pickerel, horned pout and white & yellow perch.

Huntress Pond sits at 621 feet above sea level and empties into the Suncook river through Perry Brook at Center Barnstead. It covers 48.6 acres. Average depth is 2.7 feet while the maximum depth is 6.1 feet. It can be accessed either from East Beauty Hill Road or Wes Locke / Hemlock Road. There are no public facilities on Huntress Pond.

Suncook Lake dam is located at the south end of Lower Suncook Lake
in Barnstead.

The following parameter is currently
being measured at this site:

Suncook Lake Stage (Lake Elevation)

Seasonal Fall Drawdown
Drawdown begins on October 1st. Full drawdown is reached by
Columbus Day in most years. This is done by opening the gates at the dam.
Note: The water level at the dam is two to three feet lower than the
lake level at the Narrows Bridge (between upper and lower Suncook Lakes)
gauge during winter operations

Spring Refill
Lake is refilled after spring runoff season ends and ice out.

Summer Operations
Lake level is maintained at full pond. Full pond is equal to top
of the spillway at the dam.

Note: Water levels generally fluctuate in response to precipitation,
snowmelt, drought or other meteorological conditions. Target water levels
are maintained by the adjustment of flows at the dam in response
to these conditions.
