ALTON SHORES ASSOCIATION MEETING - June 29, 2003 - Beach 3 - Hills Pond
Welcome to our web site!

Sunset Lake is at an altitude of 808 feet and covers 206 acres. The maximum depth is 62 feet and the average depth is 25 feet.  There are two islands and several rocky non-navigable parts especially if the lake is low. The lake is drawn down in the winter at the state dam. Hills Pond flows into Sunset Lake through a marshy section with a beaver dam. Hills Pond sits at an elevation of 809 feet and covers 85 acres (some sources cite 137 acres). The maximum depth is 40 feet and the average depth is 17 feet. There are also two islands. These lakes form the headwaters of the Suncook River. From the dam they flow into Crystal Lake in Gilmanton Iron Works and from there to Upper and Lower Suncook Lakes.
Some may be unaware that on the far side of the lakes are thousands of acres of conservation wilderness accessible to the public through conservation easements. This area has hundreds of miles of hiking and mountain biking trails with many scenic views and is comprised of the Belknap Mountain State Forest, Gunstock Recreation/Ski Area, Mt. Major Forest and the Hidden Valley / Camp Bell Daniel Webster Council Boy Scout Camps.  Trails can be accessed through the Boy Scout Camp either by driving in or paddling over. Check on the "Links" page for links to the camps and an excellent printable hiking map. The snowmobile map on the "Maps" page will provide you with an idea of the area encompassed. You'll see on the scout's page that the public is invited to a fireworks display each year on the Friday before the 4th of July.

THE SUNCOOK WATERSHED - (Getting the bigger picture) - This watershed begins high in the Belknap Range (formerly called the Suncook Range) high in the mountains of Gilford, with several streams and isolated Round Pond which flow into Manning Lake in Gilmanton. Manning Lake is in close proximity to Lake Eileen (at Hidden Valley Boy Scout Camp - formerly known as Lower Round Pond) and Hills Pond/Sunset Lake. All of these bodies of water flow into Crystal Lake in Gilmanton. From the Crystal Lake Dam the Suncook Brook flows into Upper and Lower Suncook Lake. From the Lower Suncook Lake Dam the Suncook River flows through Barnstead, Pittsfield and Allenstown and eventually empties into the Merrimac River.
