for upcoming artists as Boston can be sorely lacking in that regard. -
Karen Meninno, Massachusetts. June 2009
Thank you incredibly much
for featuring
Melissa Kulig. It is inspiring to witness an
artist's evolution. Melissa has found her voice in this new body of
work. It reaches all of my senses. Her exploration of self and cultural
norms is brilliantly articulated. Her thesis show is one not to miss.
Best regards - Elizabeth Hathaway, Arlington, Massachusetts. June 2009
Thank you Sand T for
sharing your online gallery blog (Making the Art Seen).
Congratulations on your inclusion of writers. Too often there are
divisions in the arts. "Making the art seen" is what it is all about.
Your dedication in promoting your fellow artist is always appreciated.
Your presentation is impressive in it's aesthetics. I am sending
everyone I meet to your site.
Best regards - Elizabeth Hathaway, Arlington, Massachusetts. June 2009

news. I think I have to leave Boston. All the good contemporary art
venues are closing. This is very sad….” - Linda K. Pilgrim,
Brookline, MA. 5/2008
We need a lot more artSPACE@16s than ICAs, MOMAs, corporate driven
'art-tainment' venues and you did a fantastic job taking on that
effort. In the end, though it is always quality over quantity (although
you no one ever got more quanity into a tiny garage before than you)
and artSPACE did the important work of quality. - Kevin Lair, NY.

Congratulations on the

become the grande dame of the local art scene, and many people are

“….I can completely
relate to the desire for change and transformation. But it's all the
harder when one leaves an established structure or venue behind. That's
actually really tough. So I was surprised to receive your announcement.
On the other hand, I absolutely understand the need to focus and
re-group. I always admired your capacity for "producing" both a very
public persona as well as your actual art work. That must have been
incredibly challenging, and I personally always feel *exhausted* just
reading about your many pursuits on your gallery's website!
….. You have so much going for you, how was Malden able to contain
this creative goddess for so long anyway?!....” - Isabel Seliger,
Germany. 5/2008

thing having that space. It helped very many people; but my hope now is
that you will have time for YOUR work again…” - Mary Sherman, Director

“I am very sad that you
are closing your space, it has been a shining light on the art scene

run it all these years. You have done such an incredible job and it has
been wonderful having that space here in the community for all these

on, even after you close it, but it will be a loss nonetheless.” - Anne

Thank you so much for all
your efforts pulling together the shows and events at artSPACE@16. You
have done so much for the art world, artists and showing what a great
eye for provocative dynamic art you have. What you did was heroic and
massive yet somehow managed to create your own art as well. Thank you
Sand T for everything and hope to tell you that in person! Take care! -
Jen Flores, Medford, MA. 5/2008
I also want to say thank
you for all you've done with the art scene in Malden. You've really
been the catalyst for getting the arts going in Malden. You've also
been very inspiring to me and encouraging. Keep me updated on what
you're doing. I may also call on you for your opinion on new work that
I finish (I'm working on a couple pieces right now.), if you have time.
I will be there at the opening. Thanks again Sand, you're
awesome! Pamela Sheridan, Malden. 5/2008
Hi Sand T.... thank you
very much for the photography competitions that you hosted and the
opportunities that you created for me to exhibit my work. You ran a
very wonderful and novel gallery for many years and I always thought
that I would get to visit more often. I regret that I did not. Perhaps
there will be opportunities to see more of your personal work on
exhibit? Perhaps you will be opening a gallery somewhere else someday?
Anyway, thank you very much for running such a wonderful gallery for so
long and for looking after us struggling artists. Take care - -Meg
Birnbaum, Somerville, MA. 5/2008
If measured by your
previous hard work and accomplishment, your future success will be
immeasurable! My best wishes, Catherine Hsu, Malden, MA. 5/2008

sure you're on to bigger ventures, if I know you. – Amanda Mantone,
Malden, MA. 5/2008
I'm so sorry to hear that
you are closing the gallery. Your kindness and professional demeanor
will be missed. Both Nina and I would like to thank you very much for
all that you have done for us. - Bartek and Nina Walicki, 5/2008
I wanted to say thank you
for all the years that the gallery was open. I really enjoyed both
seeing the exhibits there and was honored to participate in them! -
Heather Pichard, MA. 5/2008
So I will keep it short …
but it was a great run, seems like you need a break and if you want to
create a new artSPACE in the future I am sure you will and it will be
even better than @16. You were just more diligent than I was about
running the space so you do need time for your art without trying to
run a gallery as well. – Kevin Lair, NY.5/2008
The show was great. You deserve all accolades and I hope that we
see you soon! - --Lori
Good Luck to you in all
your future ventures. Thank you for everything that you have done for
all the artists, including my self. - Karen A. Wheelock, Malden, MA
5/2008
Hi Sand, since I have
known you when you were in Fort Point. I am sad to see you close
the studio, you have introduced me to many kind and creative
people. But none are as kind as you and Wes. I know after a
break you will open a new studio, I am waiting........ Harrison
Lee, JP, MA. 5/2008
you and your gallery have
been a refreshing inspiration and its and your energy will be built
upon for a long time. Thanks, Rick Fox. 5/2008
Thank YOU for exhibiting
my work and allowing me to write for artSPACE@16. I feel that you
really helped me get known around this area and you've been very
inspiring and encouraging. At first I really struggled with my move
into abstraction. Your feedback made this easier for me. Now I'm
completely bored with realism (well, with making realism). I just let
my ideas flow. I also thank you for establishing the arts here in
Malden. You've been the catalyst for this. Now I think it's up to the
rest of us artists to continue to carry that torch and keep it going.
I'm also really happy for you that you are putting your work out there
again. It's amazing work!! Thanks for all you've done! You're
really an amazing person. - Pam Sheridan, Malden, MA. 5/2008
Sand, I couldn't come to
your final show, but I wanted to say thank you for the tremendous job
you have done as an advocate for the arts both in Malden and throughout
the region. The gallery was a wonderful space with many fabulous
exhibits. I was glad to be a part of them, as an artist, a juror or
audience member. – Lauren O’Neal, 5/2008
Hi Sand T... I was really
sorry to hear you closed your gallery. Though I didn't get there often
enough -- -- I had a great deal of respect for what you showed, how
kind you are, and for all you did for artists. ...
The very best of luck to you! - Jane Sherrill, Somerville MA, 5/2008
Dear Sand T, Thank you so
much for your decade (+!) long commitment to art in the
community, and to the artists you gave such wonderful support to. I
wish you well in your new endeavors and look forward to seeing the
first exhibit of your new work. All best wishes, Dotty Tribeman, 5/2008
Fred Eid had awesome
things to say about you and your projects. Thank you for all you
have done in the Arts. I'm sure you will continue doing the same
in another venue - keep me informed. MAKE ART NOT WAR. - Lorrie
DiCesare, Melrose, MA. 5/2008

opportunities to visit it. Best of luck to you, Sand T, with your
artwork and with whatever else you decide to pursue. -- Arthur Whitman,

Hi Sand, The turnout
yesterday was terrific. Thanks for doing an excellent job getting
all those people to come to the reception. I met a lot of
interesting artists and writers and enjoyed the day very much. My
receptions are not often that lively. Your effort is hugely
generous. Thanks. Kim Salerno, Exhibiting artist, show no. 43.

keeping the arts list coming everyday! Thanks to you and your list, I
am able to keep up with all the latest art exhibitions, grants, etc.,
and I've been included in several upcoming exhibits as well! Thank you!
- Resa B., MA, 12/2007
Hello Sand T, I am
an artist who participated in your gallery's exhibition called "Present
Tense" last year, then joined this mailing list and have benefited from
further opportunities of call-for-artists, and the education of what is
happening in galleries around the country/world. Thank
you! Sincerely, - Ann C., 11/2007
Thank you for sending
these listings. What an amazing service you provide! - Amy R.,
10/2007
You are a major reason
I've gotten into so many shows!! I would not have known about many
of them except for artMATTERS. In fact, on Sunday I learned that I
got into another show that is VERY important to me: Ozspirations
at the New England School of Art and Design at Suffolk next
month. Thanks for everything! - Ruth S., 10/2007
"THANK YOU FOR YOUR
REGULAR ANNOUNCEMENTS - Thank you for your ongoing support of the arts
here and around the region." - Margaret R., 9/2007
"I can't tell you how
helpful ARTS16_list has been for me! I have applied to many of the
juried shows mentioned, which I never would have heard of, and have
gotten into many of them. Since I am very new to the art world [as
an artist] this has been invaluable. I pass the information on to
whoever I can. Thank you so much!" - Ruth G., 9/2007.
"What a generous gift you
gave us!! More and more as I'm becoming "a real artist" I've been
struck by the wonderful generosity, and sense of community I've
encountered in artists all over! I just learned tonight that I got
into a very important show, "War, Madness and Delusion", an exhibit
that will be part of a national symposium sponsored by the Andover
Newton Theological School--I never would have know about this if not
for Art16_list." - Ruth S., 10/2007
Thank you for all your
helpful art listings and opportunities. You are doing a great service
for the artist community. - Annie Newbold, Cambridge, MA, 01/2007

COMMENTS about FOUR-IN-ONE
|
Hi Sand T, I'm Stephen
Genova, the guy who brought a group of students from Mass Art to the
private Gallery showing this past summer. Thank You again for hosting
us! We were all moved by the experience of discussing art with the
artist (Kaz Naganuma), and enjoyed how he thought about his art. I plan
to see your upcoming show next month, possibly with more students.
Best, Stephen Genova, MA, 09/2007
Sand, Thank you for all
your work in putting together such a great exhibit and experience. I
know I keep heaping praise on what you are doing, but I really feel
strongly about what a unique thing it is that you have created and
continue to build. You are presenting the highest quality work that is
cutting edge and conceptually and formally experimental in an
environement that is beautiful, comfortable and open...you have built a
space that to me seems so true to what art and the creative process
really is. Many thanks to you for all you do. All the best - Rob
Strati, participating artist in FOUR-IN-ONE, Westerville, Ohio, 07/2007
Sand, thanks for all that
you did. I wouldn't have done anything if it was not for your
encouragement. XiaoWei and I had a great time in the opening. My mother
did too. I didn't have a chance to tell you how incredible you were to
have put on 40 shows. It is really unbelievable! - Fei Wang,
participating artist in FOUR-IN-ONE, Medford, MA, 07/2007

Special
Report: Meet the YWCA 2007 honoreesThese Six Maldonians Are Women To
Watch. Find Out Why. http://www.townonline.com/malden/news/x626189971
(Note: Sand T - director/founder of artSPACE@16 gallery in Malden is
one of the six honorees.)
Sand T, Congratulations!
I was so pleased to see that you are one of the Honorees for the YWCA
Malden 16th Annual Tribute to Women! I couldn't agree more; your
confidence, dedication, and motivation - - coupled with a humble,
sincere personality, makes you a very successful woman. You are an
inspiration, and I'm honored to know you! - L. Ashley, Massachusetts,
5/2007
I always admire Sand T's
dedication to operating a gallery in her garage. It takes a lot of
imagination and perseverance. People often asked why I devote
myself to a non-profit organization rather than doing other lucrative
things. I think there are people who are born to do charity work.

sense of pride and direction. One that encourages all the community to
join her and support her in her journey. Naveed Nour and I greatly
admire and appreciate her one of a kind achievements."

unexpected setting. Every show has been top notch. Sand T has a great
eye, and a gift for fostering community"
jean segaloff
"SandT is the driving force of this unusual, artist-led gallery. The
work is fresh and exciting, serious, but not without work that has a
sense of humor"
Jodi Fox
"Go Sand T. Tremendous innovation in the heart of Malden. Pleasantly
unexpected. Great forum for local artists and beyond."
Susan Lawrence
"Sand T's gallery is more than just an airy, welcoming space filled
with innovative art and surrounded by a beautiful garden. Come to
Princeton Road in Malden to see a unique crossroads of fine arts
sensibility and local community energy. It is not SO far from downtown,
and worth a trip."
joanna kao
"The gallery director had a vision for the space and she continues to
express it with every show, even while beginning with minimal
resources. The gallery has become a focus around the formation of
community, building a following that includes not only artists, but a
diverse public including political leaders, etc. Thank you, Sand T!"
Don Feeney
"In the art world there are many insufferable, self-interested types.
Sand T stands out as the most gracious and artist-committed person that
I have encountered. I can not say enough about the positive atmosphere
that she has created to bring a great variety of artists together.
artSpace@16 might be tricky to find , but it is certainly worth the
effort to get there."
Kevin Lair
"artSPACE@16 has great individual shows, and it provides an alternative
approach to art exhibition that is in itself creative and artistic. A
key part of art is discovery and seeing things in a different way and
no one provides this opportunity better in a gallery than artSPACE@16"
benjamin cariens
"all about community supporting art, art feeding community. Sand T has
vision beyond the scope of most commercial galleries."
Wayne Fox
"The community feel and the energy that is present with each show makes
Artspace@16 most enjoyable."
Heather Pilchard
"As an artist I think that artspace @16 has exciting inspiring shows.
Maybe it is because the gallery is a nonprofit and doesn’t have the
pressure of having to sell art, maybe it is the vision of the director
Sand T, or maybe it is the sense of community the gallery creates...I
think it is the combination of all three!"
alex
"Sand T. has managed to create a great gallery. The support given to
local and national emerging artists is phenomenal and inspiring.
Working with Sand and artSpace@16 was a truly wonderful experience!"
Christina Bechstein
"This gallery is one of those rare-gems, it introduces both new and
more established artists with a gallery that is minimal, funky and down
to earth. Pot-lucks after openings and performances foster a sense of
community that is so important to advocacy and survival of the arts. I
recommend that my college art students check it out as a model - it
really is that special. - - go artSPACE@16!"
DVD
"Excellent outreach - constantly updates community and artists."
Laura Mack
"This gallery is the manifestation of a very energetic person with a
strong belief in art as a community builder. Prior to ArtSpace@16 the
area of Malden was culturally deprived. I know, I grew up in Revere,
right next store. And yes, this little venue hasn't changed the town
too much yet, but Sand and her energy is changing perspectives. Art
does not have to fit in before it can rattle the windows a bit. Go
Sand!"
"This gallery has brought
members of the Malden arts community together on a regular basis. The
fine talents of Malden artists are featured and heavily promoted by the
gallery owner, Sand T. Sand is passionate about her work on behalf of
Malden artists. The City of Malden, through her efforts, has forged
partnerships with the artistic and cultural members of the community to
enhance the quality of life in Malden." – Mayor Richard Howard, the
City of Malden.
Meaghan Schwelm
"artSPACE@16 continues to curate diverse and interesting work by
artists working in all media within a context that lends itself to
conversation. SandT understands the need for community among artists
and art appreciators and also the strength of expanding our artistic
community. Community in this sense is inclusive not exclusive, growing
rather than insular."
Toru Nakanishi
"We need gallery that is so devoted in finding and promoting artists
rather than simply exploits artists and make money. Please notice what
this gallery is doing is dramatically different than others."

the most stunning and insightful exhibits in the Boston area, hands
down."
ernest watling
"artSPACE@16 is unique in that it offers superb contemporary art
exhibits, but has no desire to make money off them. In this sense, a
trip to artSPACE@16 is more like a visit to a small (tiny?) museum of
art. Sand T has accomplished much in the last 7 years, and deserves as
much recognition as anything happening in the galleries of Back Bay and
the South End."
stephen anderson

"artSPACE@16, has been
one of the most positive experiences I've had in the art world." -
Stephen Anderson, California, 05/07.
"artSPACE@16
... a common ground for art and community ... has gotta be THE most
refreshing approach to 'bringin' it' ... the art, that is ... i've seen
in a while ... founder | director Sand T converted her garage into a
cozy gallery after moving from Fort Point to Malden back on April 1,
2000 ... since it's inception, a whirling postive flow of art and
community that starts in the physical space but reaches well beyond,
ofttimes bringing news of events and calls for work from NYC and
further out in the art stratospheres. i've been part of the email list
for a while, fantastic keeping up w/ all the activity ... and i've been
to a show or 2 ... incredible to see amazing and contemporary art that
shows depth equal to that of any area museum or other artspace ... i
highly recommend stopping in on a weekend to one of their openings and
taking in some art and conversation ..." - Lou Susi, Boxford, MA,

Comments About the 36th
exhibition: PROOF: IN B/W
|
“I am honored to be invited to jury the
show Proof in B&W at artSPACE@16 in Malden, MA in October. This
will be an all-Black & White show of traditional (non-digital)
photographs. artSPACE@16 has a well-earned reputation in the Boston
area for hosting cutting-edge exhibits of all forms of artistic media,
and I am delighted to be a part of this show.” - An excerpt taken from
Paul Wainwright’s Newsletter #2 - September 2006 issue.
“I was impressed with the quality and very
wide variety of photographs that were submitted for this show. As
a “traditional” photographer, it is nice to know that there are so many
artists like myself who choose to work in this traditional medium.“As
Ansel Adams said, “Every artistic photograph should reveal not only
what is in front of the camera, but what is behind it as well."
" I am happy to see so many artists putting themselves into their
work, and I am honored to be the juror for this show. I hope you
enjoy looking at this show as much as I enjoyed selecting the images.”
- Paul Wainwright, Guest juror for PROOF: in B&W, the 36th show at
artSPACE@16. - 10/2006
“PROOF: in B&W, this juried show
acknowledges that traditional black and white photography continues to
be a powerful contemporary and very relevant medium in the twenty first
century when the skill of the darkroom artist is combined with artist's
insight at the moment of composition.” - Marlene Silva, Arlington, MA.
- 10/2006.
We had a great time and we were moved by
your professionalism and the classy nature of the exhibit. Thanks
so much for a really terrific show! - Mark Steinberg, Marblehead,

Hi Sand, just wanted to thank you for your
vision and skill in organizing PROOF. I thought the opening was
very successful, despite the rain. I was very pleased to be
included in this show, I thought Paul Wainwright's gallery talk was
informative and encouraging. Best Regards, Marlene Silva, Arlington,
MA. - 11/2006.

Thank you so much Sand T, for all your

work! I really appreciate all your efforts to get the word out on the
shows at artSPACE@16 - it is my favorite gallery in the Boston area and
I always discover new artists and see something beautiful and/or
provocative. You're the best! Yours, Elsa Campbell, East Boston, MA -
11/2006
I agree with Elsa. I felt so much more
comraderie with the other artists at artSPACE@16 than any other place.
Sand provides an environment that encourages interactions between the
artist and all the viewers, including other artists. I've learned so
much from all of you. It was a great experience. Thank you, Sand, for
making it happened. You're so wonderful about going that extra mile to
try to get local papers to cover their artists in your show. It was
truly an honor for me to be part of it. – Lisa Tang Liu, Medford, MA –
11/2006
Well said, Lisa. I feel the same
way. Sand, you have created something very special. You
promote the arts in a genuine way -- the way it should be
done. Hopefully others will follow your example. I am a new
fan, will see you at future openings, and will certainly spread a good
word! Many thanks, Camille Maren, North Andover, MA – 11/2006
Thanks for all the publicity and work you
put into the exhibition - You are fantastic! – Rusty Walter Crump,

Have to add my two cents and say that I am
most appreciative of the opportunity to be a part of this wonderful
exhibit My thanks to Sand for all the time and effort you gave to
make this a success. I feel very lucky to have been included in this
exhibit with so many very talented and creative people. I will
paraphrase a line from a Paul Simon song - mama don't take my film
away. Long live black and white. - Stan Czesniuk, Somerville, MA –
11/2006
I just wanted to affirm what everyone else
has said so far, that it was really great to be part of the show at
artSPACE@16. Not only was it an honor to be included in a show of such
strong work, but for me as a "color guy" it was doubly rewarding to
share the walls with a group of people who are so accomplished in the
area of black and white photography. Sand, you really impressed me with
your hospitality, patience and the effort you put into promoting the
show. I am extremely grateful to have shown my work in your gallery and
would look forward to any opportunity to do so again in the future. A
big Coast Artillery Corps 21 gun salute goes out to you! Hopefully all
our paths will cross again. – Don Feeney, Worcester, MA - 11/2006

About The 34th Exhibition:
PRESENT TENSE – A Drawing Show
|
The PRESENT TENSE show
was a wonderful experience for me. It is the first time I have ever had
art accepted in a juried show, so that was pretty thrilling. And
meeting the other artists was wonderful. I especially enjoyed meeting
the juror, Heidi Marston -- a very smart, down-to-earth, energetic
person. The show had a powerful impact for me -- I am in my studio
creating something that is entirely different than anything I have
done. Related, of course, but my vision has been expanded. I love the
inclusivity of the show -- the way it validates art in such variety. I
love that feeling of being part of a huge creative community -- not
just trying to make work to please a small coterie of powerful
taste-makers in NY or somewhere. - Joan Green, participating artist in
Present Tense, Cambridge, MA - 7/2006
Hi Sand and Heidi, I
wanted to just thank the two of you for a wonderful show and
opening reception! It's a great show and I am most impressed with
that view taken of what exactly drawing can be. The
definition of drawing has changed with time and as with all boundaries
in today's world, those for the act of drawing have been
broadened...this show and your choices show those changes in a
wonderful and exciting way. Thanks so much for including me in this
show! - Lyn Cardinal, Exhibiting artist in Present Tense, Somerville,
MA - 7/2006

About the 32nd exhibition:
Configurations
|
“By the time you’ve
viewed an entire art show, you’ve done the equivalent of read several
writers’ books. In "Configurations," the latest exhibit at artSPACE@16,
the majority of the stories look backward, even nostalgically, although
one of them is powerfully centered in the present. The show has a lot
going on in it, and the works in this 576-square-foot visual library
won’t disappoint even the most demanding "readers."” – An excerpt
taken from: PUTTING IT TOGETHER: Configurations, a Mixed Media Exhibit

by KATHLEEN BITETTI, Executive Director of the Artists Foundation,
Boston
in THE CREATIVE ALLIANCE COLUMN
BIG RED & SHINY online arts journal
"Sand T is an artist, activist, and founder of
artSPACE@16. She has been doing some amazing community building for
artists and the arts in Malden, MA. She has founded a key alternative
space in Malden and has also helped to galvanize the City of Malden to
become more supportive of working artists. Her story is inspirational
to say the least. The moral of her story is why wait for some to create
opportunities for artists. Artists can be pro-active in helping to make
those opportunities occur. She exemplifies a Citizen Artist!" ...

Art Museum at Brandeis University, as one of Platow’s 11 favorite
Greater Boston galleries.
|
artSPACE@16 was mentioned
in The Boston Globe Magazine 3/19/2006 on Page 29. It is
in a piece called "Art Galleries: A Guided Tour" by art critic Cate
McQuaid. Here is the opening teaser: "Raphaela Platow, curator at
the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University, is constantly prowling
Boston and suburban galleries to keep up with trends and new artists.
So we asked to tag along to check out her favorite places." artSPACE@16
is one of 11 Greater Boston area galleries reviewed. Here is the copy:
“artSPACE@16: 16 Princeton
Road, Malden 781-321-8058, www.artSPACEat16.com
Visual artist Sand T converted a two-car garage into this noncommercial
gallery that refers buyers to artists for direct purchase. "One of the
ideas behind the space is to foster and maintain an artist community in
Malden," says Platow. "A great idea and great program.”

Congratulations! That is
so cool that your gallery now has been identified in the planetary

Audrey Kalloch, Maine - 3/2006
I saw the mention about artSPACE@16 in the Globe Magazine. About time
- if you ask me. And although your space is great for supporting
Malden artists, it is so much more than that. I think your gallery is
one of the most interesting galleries, with the best shows and most
interesting artists, in Boston. - Elsa Campbell, East Boston - 3/2006
artSPACE@16 should
be an example for every community. - Banafsheh Ehtemam,

Wow! THis recognition is
not easy to get! I admire your persisstence, and it deserves to be
rewarded. - Joanna L Kao, Boston, MA - 3/2006

About the 31st exhibition:
The LOCALS: III
|
Three excerpt taken from
"artSPACE@16 goes ’LOCALS’ again By Jocelyn Edwards for the Malden
Observer, Friday, February 17, 2006 issue.:
"The Malden artists
participating in the LOCALS show this year said they appreciate the
opportunity interact with the community. In contrast to other
galleries, at artSPACE@16, "there is a lot of interaction between
audience and painters," said Rodzvilla. "Malden is still such a small
that it is still very local. There is no intimidation factor. The
people who are there as the audience are your neighbors. The proximity
to other artists makes it feel very open between artist and viewer." -
John Rodzvilla, Malden, MA - 2/2006
“Curator Sand T describes
the public response to artSPACE@16’s LOCALS series as "overwhelming."
At the same time for artists, the show serves as "an encouragement for
them to create more work, to be more involved and to share their new
work with the community," she said. A grant from the LEF Foundation, a
small, independent arts sponsorship group based in New England and
California, will partially pay for this year’s show.” – in the Malden
Observer.
“Drawn to Malden for
various reasons, the artists of the LOCALS: III exhibit are all
relatively new to the city but have quickly become involved in its
community. Carolina Pachon, who moved to Malden in July with her
husband Bartek Walicki, was excited to find a "lively" arts scene here
and connect with other artists through such venues as artSPACE@16 and
Malden Sketch Group’s Monday drawing sessions.” - in the Malden
Observer.
"Great
exhibition!!! So much cohesive talent in Malden! Leave it to
you to bring it together." - Marjorie Kaye, director of the Caladan
gallery, Salem, MA - 2/2006

"... The best quality of artSPACE@16 is its
accessibility, not only in its location, but also in its spirit. There
is a level of comfort and ease that other galleries and contemporary
museums do not achieve. Sand T's warm, welcoming personality adds to
this feeling as she chats with the patrons and artists who stop in,
inviting all to take part in her vision of an arts community where
artists and appreciators can come together "to take part in building a
vibrant artists' community...." - Celena Carr, writer for the
Midddlesex Beat Arts Magazine, 11/2005
You are doing incredible work in Malden
and are an inspiration to all artists not to wait around but to become
proactive! - Kathleen Bitteti, Executive Director, the Artists
Foundation, Boston MA - 12/2005
Great article!!!
(artSPACE@16 AND OWNER SAND T: BUILDING A VIBRANT ARTS COMMUNITY IN

your gallery and your mission! - Sandra Castillo, Medford, MA -
11/2005
Congratulations on the article! You have always been an inspiration
with you passion and determination for art. We admire your tireless
effort in curating shows after shows. You've been providing great
exhibition opportunities for fellow artists. - Ensze Tan, gallery
director for TATTFOO Gallery in New York, NY - 11/2005
Sand as ever you are an

About the 30th Show: LOVE
SMALL
|
I hear that the show was
wonderful! I only wish I could have made a trip up to see it, but I
just couldn't. Thanks again! - Christina Richards, exhibition artist in
LOVE SMALL, Brooklyn, NY - 11/05
"Thanks again for the
show and your hard work, makes me want to move out to Malden..." -
Stephen Anderson, exhibiting artist in LOVE SMALL - Huntington Beach,
California - 11/2005
Thanks so much Sand! My
family will be proud to see I finally have a web presence of some sort!
It may have been freezing but the opening was fun and informative
nonetheless-- I really enjoyed hearing so many artists' stories about
their work. Again, really great job. I truly appreciate it. - Amy
Baxter MacDonald, exhibiting artist in LOVE SMALL, Dorchester, MA -
11/2005
I am so glad I came.
Also, it was great to finally meet you. The space is really nice, but
what makes it better and the show so great, (I suspect the other ones
are as well) is your personality, enthusiasm, and great way of putting
everything together. I actually want to start some sort of space here
in Chicago, and this experience has inspired me... Thanks for
everything. - Alex Segreti, Chicago, IL - exhibiting artist in LOVE
SMALL - 11/2005
Sand T...I really
appreciate...as probably a lot of people do ...all your efforts in
getting things done and watching out for us. Thanks again for all your
hard work and AMAZiNG SKILLS! - Sandra Castillo, exhibiting artist in
LOVE SMALL, Medford, MA - 11/2005
Hi Sand, Thanks for everything yesterday!
I really enjoyed seeing the actual work. It really is a strong and
interesting exhibition. I really appreciated the opportunity to jury
LOVE SMALL, and I applaud all you are doing to promote the artists. It
was a privilege to be involved with artSPACE@16. - Adria Arch, guest
juror for LOVE SMALL - Arlington, MA - 11/2005
Sand T, I really have to
acknowledge what a great experience it has been with you and the
gallery - very professional, and lots of timely info. I wish I was able
to come up to see LOVE SMALL. Thanks! - Stephen Anderson, exhibiting
artist in LOVE SMALL - Huntington Beach, California - 10/2005
I wish I had known about
this exhibition. I too work small and am a big believer in the
philosophy that big things happen in small paintiings! Yes, there can
be a stigma against small works and it is great to see this kind of
exhibition supporting the importance and validity of small works. I
will look forward to seeing LOVE SMALL. - Ellen Rolli, Melrose, MA -
10/2005
I want to express a note
of appreciation for all the work I see that you are putting into the
LOVE SMALL exhibit. I'm sure a similar amount of energy is required for
all the exhibits, so I'm that much more in wonder. I look forward to
participating in the event. - Tim Barner, exhibiting artist in LOVE
SMALL - Medford, MA - 9/2005
I am elated to be a part
of this forthcoming LOVE SMALL show juried by Adria Arch! I have just
recently moved back to the area and am excited to reconnect with the
arts in the greater Boston area, an opportunity that I think this show
could provide the stepping stone for. Furthermore, I was so impressed
and excited to discover artSPACE@16 - your mission and efforts are
commendable, more than respectable, and viciously needed!! Thanks
again. - Emily Driscoll, exhibiting artist - Lynn, MA - 8/2005
It is a pleasure to know
you and I am very honored that you asked me to jury the LOVE SMALL
show. I really respect what you are trying to do --- you are incredibly
professional and dedicated. Thank you for bringing your vision to
Boston! - Adria Arch - Education Director at the Arlington Center for
the Arts (guest juror for LOVE SMALL) - 8/2005

The 29th Show: COLOR BY
DIGITAL
|
You are really truly
amazing keeping track of all of this and making sure the artist gets
feedback. I'm really grateful to have the oportunity to meet you!
Warmly, Cristina Pujol, Somerville, MA - exhibiting artist in COLOR BY
DIGITAL - 10/2005
" Congrats on all the
press for COLOR BY DIGITAL, and, what sounds like a great show. I heard
good things about it from my old Museum School friends. Sad my work
schedule didn't let me make it in person. And, thank you for your work
in making it happen. I noticed that a major part of what you've been
doing in Malden is helping create a community and arts district-- and
seem to have quite amazing civic and local government support in that
venture... " - Ian Winters, exhibiting artist in COLOR BY DIGITAL -
Berkeley, Califonia - 10/2005
I want to express a note
of appreciation for all the work I see that you are putting into the
LOVE SMALL exhibit. I'm sure a similar amount of energy is required for
all the exhibits, so I'm that much more in wonder. I look forward to
participating in the event. - Tim Barner, exhibiting artist in LOVE
SMALL - Medford, MA - 9/2005
The idea of COLOR BY
DIGITAL show sounds facinating. I'm an archivist by trade, so most of
what I hear about re: digital imaging and inkjet printing is the
preservation challenges inherent in those types media. It will be nice
to see the artistic side of the technology. - Maria, Letter From Eastie
- East Boston, 9/2005
You did a wonderful job
creating a narrative for the COLOR BY DIGITAL show. I just finished
reading the blurbs and also looked up people's websites - - let me just
say that I am very impressed and delighted with what you do. Must I add
that the words in your announcement literally came jumping off my
computer screen, energized and energizing as they are? Toru and
yourself succeeded in presenting a cohesive idea and vision for this
show. It is important to learn more about digital photography and to
stay up to date. This exhibit isn't 'only' about art, but about showing
and communicating the current possibilities and trends in said medium.
- Isabel Seliger, exhibiting artist COLOR BY DIGITAL - Berlin, Germany

"I saw a lot that was
happening here," Wilson said of Malden's art scene. "There's a lot more
activity in the government to fund and encourage the arts here than in
the Midwest." Wilson said that she was thrilled to discover
organizations such as Sand T's artSPACE@16 and the MATV Gallery in her
hometown. "I wanted to come home and be a part of it," she said. -

The 28th Show: PLAYSCAPE
|
Sand T, I met you last
weekend at the reception for PLAYSCAPE. I saw the art space, I think
what you are doing, especially as a non-profit entity, is very
encouraging and inspiring. - Nicole Kita - Boston, MA - 7/2005

The 27th Show:
IMPERSONATURE
|
Sand T deserves high
praise for her curatorial vision. In "Impersonature" the artists' work
was so smartly put together that it truly enhanced the way people saw
my work. This kind of a conceptual clarity coupled with such visual
cunning is rare among curators, and it is nonexistent in suburban
garages. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to exhibit my work at
artSPACE@16 ." - Kim Salerno, exhibiting artist - Newport, RI - 7/2005
I want to thank you too.
The whole process from installation to break down was so enjoyable. You
not only selected some fine work to exhibit but the artists were all a
pleasure to spend time with. You also know that I think the concept of
art integrated into a neighborhood is wonderful. It serves to bring art
and its importance to a new audience-often to people who might not
otherwise visit an art gallery. You are doing something essential, and
the shows I've seen in your garage have topped most shows in mainstream
galleries. Thanks!!!!!! - Marcella Anna Stasa, exhibiting artist -
Upton, MA - 7/2005
"... I applaud Sand T in
opening an arts space in such a low traffic area, though that does not
seem to be a problem for her as artSPACE@16 has broad notoriety. A few
highways, roundabouts, and a couple neighborhoods with streets named
after trees took me there, and it was worth the drive. I just wish my
neighborhood was a little closer to hers, and now my own neighborhood
feels inadequate for lack of such a space...." - An excerpt taken from

"Malden Makes Room for Art ...
There's big community arts news from
Malden, Massachusetts. The tiny community (56,000 pop., five miles
square) five miles north of Boston is pushing hard to make room for
art. Malden Redevelopment Authority is acquiring vacant downtown space
for studios and is converting the former Sacred Hearts Convent into
artists' live/work space. Galleries are opening around Malden Square
(the mayor even has one in his office) and plans are being laid for an
artists-in-the-schools program. Local arts organizer Sand T is
encouraging use of every building in Malden for the arts and has opened
a gallery her own garage called artSPACE@16. Sand T's Web site is a
good model grassroots for advocating city redevelopment through the
arts. .." - article courtesy of the CommunityArtsNetwork -

like you have a lot of interesting shows." - Mary O'Malley, MA - 5/2005
artSPACE@16 is the kind
of place I had hoped existed. Meeting Sand T and seeing her vision in
person leads me to believe that hopes beyond the ordinary are valid and
viable. Setting up 2 SOLOS with Sand and Rick was a joy. Sand has a
gift for bringing artists dealing with varying concepts and materials
together, because her sense of light and space is ever present. When
the garage is empty... there is no such thing. artSPACE@16 is filled
with what once was, what is, and what will be. Thank you to Sand and
Rick for an experience that continues to enrich my experience of space,
art, and life. - Meaghan Schwelm, exhibiting artist - Salem, MA - 5/2005
It has been so nice to
work with you and thank you so much for sharing your space and letting
me be a part of something with such tangible momentum and quality
behind it. Any time you want to do any sort of collaboration, just ask
and I'm in. You have made my work look better than it is and introduced
me to Meaghan who's work is such a nice surprise. - Rick Fox,

"ArtSPACE @ 16 in Malden
is a professionally run non-commercial exhibition space. This means
that they attract talented artists and curators and that the artists
are able to keep 100 percent of the selling price of their work. This
is good for the buyer as well as the artist, since commercial galleries
typically double the price that the artist wants to earn for each piece
of artwork. Some galleries are undoubtedly making silly profits off
this, but most are just chugging along, trying to pay rent. ArtSPACE @
16 is able to avoid the money hassles, because the gallery is located
in the converted garage of the director's driveway in a quiet
residential neighborhood in Malden. It's also able to avoid the
bureaucratic hassles faced by most nonprofits, which constantly have to
be satisfying grant panels, board members and private donors with their
curatorial decisions. ArtSPACE @ 16 has what so few galleries do:
freedom to do what they please, because they don't have to please
anyone else...." (click to read full article) An excerpt courtesy of

"ARE
you one of those who can’t understand why people wax lyrical over a
lumpy abstract sculpture? It could be that you’re just another victim
of the elitist culture perpetuated by those who feel exclusivity is
tantamount to superiority. If the grandeur of large galleries
intimidates you, perhaps you need to get acquainted with the subject in
a cosier environment. A small neighbourhood gallery, for instance,
where locals can meet to peruse the works of the art community, and
have a slap-up meal together afterwards. Up close and personal, Tan Soh
Hoon, better known as Sand T in art circles, spends her spare time
bringing local artists closer to the communities they live in. She is
the sole-operator of the gallery called artSPACE@16 in Massachusetts,

at the opening, I think this reflects the interest and need of art in
the community. I truly look forward to each show. Your gallery means a
lot to me, it’s encouraging and refreshing to me as an artist and now
as a mother. I want Ian to grow up with culture and diversity, thanks

WEST END CAFE GALLERY in
Malden
|
"Sand T, I would like
to thank you again for everything you've been doing for us. I wanted
the Cafe to be a great place so that people will enjoy coming and have
fun here. I started distributing leaflets to advertise the Cafe
Gallery. Thanks to you several artists have contacted me regarding
showing work at the Cafe. This encouraged me a lot! I appreciate your
support. I think we can make West End a great place for everyone as a
Cafe and as an art Gallery." - Sylvie Morretto, owner of West End
Cafe, Malden, MA - 10/2004
PLEASE NOTE: Sylvie's Cafe
gallery closed due to some unsolved personal reason.
Hello Malden, This is to
inform you that West End Cafe Gallery owners Sylvie and Danny Moretto
have decided to close their business for good for some personal
reasons. Sylvie would like to thank you for your support and patronage.
She is very disappointed about the closing as she knew that it could
have been a great place for everyone as a cafe and also as an art
gallery. I'm sure some of you probably feel the same way. Thank you for
your attention. - Sand T
Hello Sand T, I just
wanted to tell you how great your opening was the other night at West
End Cafe Gallery. I've never been to one quite like it and the whole
thing was wonderful. I'll definitely think about those musicians
(Auddity) for my next reception! Congratulations. Also, I really love
your work. It's such a still place to look into. Beautiful. - Marjorie
Kaye - Salem, MA - 10/2004
Sand T, Thanks! It was a
lot of fun! I really enjoyed seeing some of your earlier work, and I am
looking forward to a time when I get to see more of your recent pieces.
The audience was really great! I love being able to play in front of
folks that really listen and appreciate what I do. Any time you want us
to play again, just let us know! - Erik Nugent / AUDDITY - Haverhill,
MA - 10/2004
It was a lot of fun!
Definitely a success! The paintings looked great! - Mike Uzzi /
SMARTYPANTS, Somerville, MA - 10/2004
Great show! Thanks, as
always - for your enormous energy into the arts - especially in Malden!
- Kelvy Bird - Malden, MA - 10/2004
Hi, Sand, Thanks for
putting on such a great event at West End Cafe Gallery! From what I saw
of your work, I thought it was exquisite: bold colors that seemed
harnessed to controlled reflection on the artist's emotions or
memories. They felt powerful and calming at once. I also liked a lot of
what "Auddity" had to offer, and indeed I may be asking them to produce
a music soundtrack for a video I'll be working on. Thanks again, and I
look forward to your next exhibit. Peace, John Sanbonmatsu - Medford,
MA - 10/2004
Thanks so much, again,
for joining in the fun reception last Thurs at the West End Coffee
House. I thought the event went exceptionally well, and I was truly
most surprised by the number of artist folk who came out from
Malden!!!! I really had no idea there was such an artist’s community
here, and could not be happier for it. - Kelvy Bird, Malden, MA - 3/2004

The 24th Show: PHOTO
LAB(oratory)
|
Hi Sand T! The PHOTO
LAB(oratory) show was fabulous...thanks so much for all your hard work.
Best, Jane Hesser, exhibiting artist - Providence, RI - 10/2004
Greetings Sand T, once
again, congratulations on a wonderful exhibition and I hope the potluck
was fun. We visited your gallery on the 18th, knowing we'd be unable to
join you today. I've communicated with John Chervinsky and Leslie Brown
- telling them how much I enjoyed the PHOTO LAB(oratory) exhibit. I
hope it gets the viewing it deserves. All the work in the exhibit was
terrific. Best wishes, Karen Davis - MA - 09/2004
Hi Sand T - I just wanted
to thank you again for such a nice opening for the PHOTO LAB this last

Thanks for continuing to
get the word out for community and art activities in Malden. You are an
incredible hub! - K.B. - Malden, MA - 10/2004
Sand T, I just wanted to
drop you a note to let you know that you have really encouraged me as
an artist, in a time when I really needed it. I am an artist in
Oklahoma. I just graduated from the art school at the University of
Oklahoma with my BFA, majoring in media........ I have recently been
discouraged because of what your website describes so perfectly as,
"after art school, where students find constant interaction, an
artist's life can be lonely." I guess the point is that it was
encouraging to know that I am on the right track in what I am doing,
and that there are other communities already doing this successfully.
It made me feel connected, in a universal way because of the common
goal of getting art out there to the public and bringing together
artists. So anyway, sorry if the e-mail was long, but for some reason I
felt like sharing with you the huge impact you made on me today. -

You're doing a great job
at artSPACE@16, and your shows get more exciting every year. Keep up
the good work! - Tracy Phillips. Boston, MA - 09/28/2004
I am a Somervillian
artist of sculpture and painting. We here in Somerville have heard good
things about your space. - J.H. Somerville, MA - 09/28/2004
I just finished my
Master's in Art History at the University of Texas at Austin,
specializing in modern and contemporary Latin American art. My husband
and I just moved to the Worcester area and I'm trying to get a feel for
the art scene(s) here and in the Boston area. I'm really interested in
these grass-roots artist communities that have created their own
strongholds here in the state. Exploring your website more, looks like
y'all are trying to develop a kind of Arts District in Malden. Tonight,
here in Worcester, they're having an annual Cultural Committee meeting
to discuss the same concept here in Worcester (Man, do we need it
BAD!)...- Madeline Medeiros Ruiz - Worcester, MA - 09/29/2004
This is great to see such
lively art activity in Malden. - Nan Freeman - Boston, MA - 8/2004
artSPACE@16 - a hidden
jewel in Malden, indeed!!! - Deborah A.Burke - Malden, MA - 8/2004
Thanks for having the
review in Phoenix sent. I enjoyed the article, because it's a kind of
homage to what you're all about. - Yosh Sanbonmatsu - Plymouth - 08/2004
"...Mary Curtain
recommended you and said you were a "real mover/shaker on the art
scene".." - Steve Lipsey - Boston, MA - 08/2004
"A gallery in a garage in Malden? Damn
fucking straight! What a relief to find something like this -
professionally run, interesting and non-commercial (nothing's for sale
in this place) - in the middle of a real live suburban neighborhood.
Boston needs more things like this. Maybe a gallery in a secret
underground bunker or on the roof of a shopping mall. Future Boston
gallerists: Let artSPACE@16 be your inspiration." - An excerpt courtesy
of the Weekly Dig 7/7/2004 from a review by Kate Ledogar.
Your website is GREAT! Very informative!
- Lawrence Wong, Toronto, CANADA - 7/2004

I am an artist who grow up in Malden;
first on Rockwell Terrace, then on Church Street off of Salem. I am so
excited to see that Malden is having a growth in the Arts. Keep up the
great work!! I am a graduate of Savannah College of Art and Design with
a masters in Illustration. I also have my BFA in Drawing. I am
currently living in Michigan. The arts in the mid-west is dying from
conservative law makers who are cutting all funding for the Arts. I
would Love to be a part of your Art Scene. Again Great Job!! - Elise
Wilson, Michigan (Fellow Malden Resident) - 6/2004
I'm thrilled that the city is interested
in developing the arts in general. We hope to write emails in support.

Malden Observer's "Vote for
Citizen of the Year 2003"
|
"She has been beyond tireless in her
efforts to get the community involved in the process and keep the
community involved in it. She has done wonders for getting people from
different histories to gather under a common appreciation of art and
meet one another. She has gotten people to stop thinking of Malden as a
stopping point along the way, and start thinking of it as a place to
grow community. She has inspired residents of Malden and beyond to
create art and share it with others. She has created a demand for more
art throughout the city, as well as convincing people that they can
create it." - Anonymous - Malden, MA - - Candidate profile

from 3rd Space at the gallery and thanks to Steve Aishman for curating
a really great exhibit-the quality of the work was terrific and I felt
pleased to have my work included. I also want to tell you that I really
admire what you're doing. Putting art in a neighborhood, community

the means to think about art in all settings. I look forward to seeing

tremendous job pulling it all together, so thanks to YOU too!! - Lauren
O' Neal, Malden, MA - 2/2003
Thanks Sand T! It was
great to see such a big turn out! I would also suggest the following -
for the next meeting each artist should bring a friend or neighbor to
the event who ISN'T an artist. It's really important for all of Malden
to be aware of what could happen, and be a part of making it happen (
It also sends an important message to the city to see more than just
artists behind the idea of making the city art-focussed.) - Jennifer
Mecca, Boston, MA - 2/2003
Hello Sand T, I'm
enjoying the flurry of publicity the art community is getting in the

"Thanks to Sand's
commitment in running artSPACE@16, all the residents of Malden have the
opportunity to view art created right here in Malden." Stephanie Mahan
Stigliano continues, "We all can benefit from seeing art locally; we
don't have to travel far to see interesting culture. Since the opening
of artSPACE@16, Sand has encouraged a sense of community by dedicating
herself to presenting group exhibitions, performances, and cultural
events. Sand has provided a much needed meeting ground for local
artists. With Malden Art Now 2003, we wish to widen the circle by
including artists who may not be aware of this non-commercial
alternative art space. We hope to build a larger audience for that art.
I look forward to the day when Malden, like many of our neighboring
communities, will sponsor its own "Open Studio" event." - An excerpt
