A Thomas L. Applegate
Researchers have not as yet been able to identify the parents of Thomas L. The [DTA] records suggest that his mother was Lucretia Byrd (sister of Sarah Byrd who married Ebenezer Applegate, son of Jacob and Esther Irons) and that his father was an Ebenezer Applegate. In about 1943, Harry Applegate (grandson of Thomas L., son of Charles L.) indicated that Thomas L.'s father was Ebenezer Applegate. Charles Wilbur of Island Heights (grandmother was Mary Applegate the daughter of Joseph Applegate a friend of Thomas L.) said the same thing. At the present time, an effort is under way to identify the possible Ebenezers who may be the father of Thomas L.The records in [NJVS] indicate that Hannah T. Applegate was the daughter of Timothy and Hannah Thompson and that she was born in St. John, New Brunswick, Canada. The records of [JK] state that mother Hannah Thompson died soon after daughter Hannah's birth and that Timothy married Althea (maiden name unknown). Timothy died 10-1-1808 and is interred in the Old Methodist Cemetery in Toms River. In fact, Timothy's grave appears to be one of the earliest, if not the earliest, of the graves in the cemetery. It is reported that Hannah taught as a substitute school teacher [JK].
Family tradition indicates that Thomas L. served in the War of 1812 as a wagon master. However, a search of the records in Trenton, N.J. and the National Archives in Washington has not been able to positively affirm that fact.
In addition to the parentage of Thomas L., the following questions remain unproved: birthplace - Toms River, marriage date - 1816, marriage place - Toms River.
Thomas L. was listed as a Trustee of the M. E. Church in Cedar Grove when land was deeded to the Church by Ebenezer Applegate on January 1, 1848. Other Trustees were: Joseph B. Applegate, Moses Applegate, Samuel C. Applegate, James D. Wilbur, Joseph Pine, and Ivins D. Wilbur. The deed (Book 4, p. 398 -- Monmouth County Court House) conveys 1/4 acre near the "Applegate Burying Ground".
On March 21, 1825, Thomas L. cosigned a $500 bond for Peter Wainwright Jr. to become Constable for Dover Township [DB]. The other signees were: Vincent Wainwright, Peter Wainwright, Joseph Johnson, Cornelius D. Thompson, and Ralph Luker.
On February 5, 1830, Thomas L. registered the ear mark for his "creatures". The mark is described as follows: half penny out under side left ear and half crop of upper side same. The notation indicated that this mark was formerly Edward Wilbour's.
Thomas L. was listed in [DB] as Overseer of the Highways for 1829, 1837, 1845, 1846, and 1847.
Thomas L. was enumerated in the 1830 Census as a resident of Dover Township. The listing indicated a household consisting of male 1:30-40 (Thomas L.), male 1:10-15 (Vincent W.), males 2:5-10 (Thomas B. and Ebenezer), males 2:5 (John W. and Nathan S.), female 1:90-100 (?), female 1:30-40 (Hannah), female 1:10-15 (Althea), and female 1:5 (Lucinda).
Thomas L. was numerated in the 1840 Census as a resident of Dover Township. The listing indicated a household consisting of males 2:5 (Israel and Oscar F.), males 3:5-10 (Edwin R., Benjamin T., and Charles L.); males 2:10-15 (Nathan S. and John W.), male 1:15-20 (Ebenezer or Thomas B.), male 1:40-50 (Thomas L.), female 1:5 (Angnes R.), female 1:10-15 (Lucinda), and female 1:40-50 (Hannah).
Thomas L. was enumerated in the 1850 Census as a resident of Dover Township. The listing indicated a household consisting of Thomas L. (age 57), Hannah (age 53), John (age 25), Nathan (age 22), Charles (age 20), Benjamin (age 18), Edwin R. (age 17), Agnes (age 15), Oscar (age 12), Israel (age 12), Thaddeus (age 7).
Thomas L. was enumerated in the 1860 Census as a resident of Dover Township. The listing indicated a household consisting of Thomas L. (age 68), Hannah (age 64), Oscar (age 24), Thaddeus (age 17), and Matilda Jarite (age 11).
Ella T.. was enumerated in the 1870 Census as a resident of Dover Township. The listing indicated a household consisting of Ella T. (age 73 b. St. Johns). It should be noted that according to the order in which the census are listed that Hannah was living next door to her son, Thaddeus.
Thomas and Hannah was listed as a member of the Cedar Grove M.E. Church, ca. 1860.
The records of [JK] contain a letter written by Hannah to her son Nathan (and daughter-n- law) dated November 23, 1869. That letter was written almost two years after the death of Thomas L. Nathan and family were probably living in Holt County, Missouri at the time. Below is an edited transcript of that letter.

It appears that Hannah gave a family bible for her son, Thaddeus, and included a record of births and deaths. The sections of the bible containing the inscriptions were presented to the Ocean County Historical Society by Thaddeus's granddaughter. Those pages have been preserved by the Society and are on file in the Genealogical Section of the Society Headquarters. A transcript of those records is as follows:

The listing indicated a household consisting of Albert (age 38), Elizabeth (age 35), Donald (age 16), Rolandus (age 15), Cynthia (age 8), Iris (age 6), Edward (age 4), and Ellsworth (age 2). (wife, 44), Cynthia (dau, 18), Iris (dau, 16), Edward (son, 14), Ellsworth (son, 12), Eleanor (dau, 10), Edith (dau, 4), Virginia (dau, 2)
Albert and Elizabeth lived in the Toms River area when they were first married. The oldest child, Donald was born in Toms River; shortly after that, they moved to Freehold. Albert worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad from about 1893 through 1912. Almost all that time, they lived downtown Freehold. Albert left employment with the railroad after about 20 years and removed to Hichory, North Carolina for a short period of time ca. 1912/1913. He returned north with his family, except for his oldest son, Donald, taking a job with the Central Railroad working out of Springtown, Pennsylvania. In early 1915, Albert and his family removed to Island Heights, New Jersey.
A deed transferring one acre of land from Susan E. Schock of Pemberton, N.J. to Lizzie D. Applegate for the amount of $100 is record in Book 476, p. 145. The land was on the corner of Park and Madison Avenues (now Parkwood and Adams Avenue -- Dover Township) which was just north of the Islands Heights-Dover Township border. During the period 1915 through his death in 1927, Albert worked in the boat yard in Island Heights as a boat builder. After his death in 1927, his widow, Elizabeth Hyres Applegate opened a laundry business to support her family. She later married Frank Tansley, who was employed as a bridge tender for the Pennsylvania Railroad. After his retirement in early 1950, he became the steward for the Island Heights Yacht Club a position he held until his 80th birthday. Frank Tansley died in 1975 at the age of 96.
Both Albert P. and Elizabeth Hyers were born in Dover Township. The New Jersey Vital Statistics records indicate that Albert was born in Toms River. Elizabeth was born in a house on Washington Street about a 1/4 mile west of the Route #37 intersection. Donald was born in Toms River; Rholantus, Harold, Cynthia, Iris, Edward, Ellsworth, Elmer, and Eleanor were born in Freehold; Edith was born in Island Heights (in the Bogart house which they rented); Virginia and Hugh were born in the Parkwood/Adams house.
