John and Jane lived in the South Ward of Camden in 1850. They moved to Philadelphia, Pa about 1853. They lived there until Jane died. John was listed variously as M.D., M.D./Herb Doctor, Manufacturer of Indian Spices. At the time of his death, he was living in Pleasant Plains, N.J. with his daughter, Martha Newman. His illness lasted 3 years.

On December 23, 1843, he married Jane Prichard in Maurice Pines, Cumberland County, N.J. with Joel S. Robinson officiating. Jane is the daughter of Aaron Prichard and Lettia Spence.

The following account is contained in the records of [HV]:

Daniel was married on October 29, 1864 at Toms River with Joseph Lawrence officiating. He enlisted in the Union Army, serving in Co. H, 29th NJ Inf. during the Civil War. At enlistment, he was 5'10" in height, had fair complexion, with grey eyes and black hair. He was a butcher by trade. After the War, he went West, living first in Mound City, Linn Co., Kansas; then in Joplin, Mo.; then in the Chicksaw Nation in the old Indian Territory, near Duncan, Ok., and finally moving to Putnam, Dewey Co., Ok.

Daniel was listed in the household of his father in the Census of 1850 (age 12) and 1860 (age 23).

Daniel served in the Union Army during the Civil War. He enlisted at Freehold in Co. F, 29th NJ Inf. on September 30, 1862. He served at Acquina Creek Landing, Va. where he was injured while cutting down trees when one rolled on him. As a result of the injury, he was discharged on June 30, 1863. After the War he went to Texas.

He served in the Civil War and afterwards in the army as an assistant Surgeon and then Surgeon with the 11th Rev. Pa. Vol Cavalry, serving from February 26, 1863 to June 6, 1868. At enlistment, he was 5' 7 1/2" in height, was fair complexioned, had grey eyes and brown hair. [HV]

On September 8, 1889, he married Jennie L. Collins. She was an adopted daughter of E. Collins of Ferrisburgh, Addison County, Vermont.

Edwin Ruthven was born in Sardina, Brown Co. Ohio and died at Verna, Lawrence Co., Mo. He enlised in the Union Army during the Civil War in the 8th Ill. Inf. on April 30, 1861, entering service on May 19, 1861 for a 3 month term. He was discharged on August 20, 1861 and immediately re-enlisted in Company H, 11th Mo. Inf. On June 30, 1862, he was promoted to a 2nd Lieut.; and on May 22, 1863 was promoted to Capt. of that company. He was discharged at Memphis on January 13, 1866. He served in over 40 battles, such as New Madrid, Corinth, Miss. Vicksbur, Nashville, and others. At enlistment, he was listed as 5'6" in height, had dark complexion, grey eyes, and dark hair. He was a clerk.

After the war, he clerked in Sumner, Ill., bought and sold agricultural implments. In 1871, he moved to St. Louis and kept books for Payne, Moddy and Co. He moved to Dakota Tertitory in 1875, but finding the weather too servere, he moved back to Sumner, Ill. where he lived for sometime. In 1889, he moved to Lawrence Co., Mo. He bought a farm in Berry Co., but never farmed it.

He entered U.S. Govt. Service and served the Revenue Dept. He was a prominent Mason; served for sometime as President of the Bank of Verona, Mo. His family attended the Presbyterian Church. He married (1) on Jan. 20, 1870 to Louise A. Brumfield, (2) at Sumner, Ill. to her sister, Laura B. Brumfield. They were daughters of T. J. Brumfield. He married (3) on May 28, 1909 to Mrs. Mary E. Ashley who was the widow of Charles Taylor who died Oct. 8, 1881 and Danield Ashley who died on April 12, 1904.

In 1900, Edwin and family were living in McDonald Twp., Barry Co., Mo.; later they lived in Verona, Lawrence Co., Mo.

The following account is contained in the records of [HV]:

Henry Clay was born in Brown Co., Ohio on August 15, 1843; died February 14, 1938 in Medford, Oregon.

He enlisted on July 20, 1861 in St. Louis, Mo. in the 11th Mo. Inf. At enlistment, he was listed as 5'9 3/4" in height, was dark complexioned, had dark hair, and grey eyes.

He was a carpenter. He was promoted to 1st Lieut. and Quartermaster of the Regiment. He was discharged at Montgomery, Alabama on October 10, 1865.

After the war, he lived in 1865-1873 in Irwin, Illinois, 1873-79 in West Union, Iowa, 1879-89 in Mitchell, Dakota Terr.; 1889-1900 in Seattle, Washington; and the remainder of his life in Medford Oregon.

On January 4, 1866, he married Margaret Ratcliff Shelby in Olney, Ill.

Joseph enlisted in Co. G, 27th Ind. Inf. on Aug 13, 1861; and was discharged at Frederick, Maryland on September 7, 1862, after being wounded in the right thigh at the battle of Antietam. At enlistment, he was 5' 5" in height, was light complexioned, had light hair, and blue eyes. He was a farmer and lived in Williamsburg, Johnson County, Indiana. He discharge records also indicated that he had aortic aneurism which was responsible for this medical discharge.

On May 1, 1863, he transferred to the Gen. Command Staff and was promoted to principal musician. At enlistment, he was living in Williamsburg, Joshnson County, Ind, and was 5' in height, had blue eyes, and light hair.

At enlistment, he was 5' 6" in height, was light complexioned, had blue eyes and light hair.

On May 8, 1874 in Switzerland County, Indiana, he married Louisa Jane Meddock. She was the daughter of Gern Meddock and Lucy Shipman. Louisa had been married twice before.

2-23-1905 -- One of our oldest and much esteemed citizens, Uncle Solomon Applegate, as his was familliarly called, died at his home, Friday, in his 84th year. Funeral sermon at the Methodist Episcopel Church by Rev. W. E. Blackestan, asisted by Rev. C. I. Applegate. he leaves a widow and a large family of children and grand-children.

11-1910 -- Mrs. Elizabeth Applegate, widow of the late Solomon Applegate of Cear Grove, died Friday, Marth 11th age 84 years and 10 months. She was buried Tuesday at Riverside Cemetery from the Cedar Grove M.E. Church. Her maiden name was Vaughn. She was a lifelong resident of this locality. She was the mother of thirteen children - eight of whom are now living.

Lewis enlisted in the army in the Civil War serving in Co. H., 153rd Ind. Inf. He joined on February 17, 1865 and was discharged on Septeber 4, 1865. At enlistment, he was 5'4" in height, had fair complexion, blue eyes, dar hair and was a farmer.

In 1900 he lived in Howard County, Taylor Township, Indiana.

On March 8, 1868, Lewis D. married Harriet A. McCaulley. Harriet died on March 19, 1875. Then on January 19, 1879, Lewis married Hannah Ellen Langley. [HV]

Clayton served in the Civil War in the Union Army. He enlisted on August 15, 1862 and discharged at Nashville, Tenn. on June 14, 1865. At enlistment, he was 5' 9" in height, had light complexion, blue eyes and dark hair. He was wounded slightly in the left hand at the battle of Chicamauga. He was promoted to 5th Sergeant on August 1, 1864. Clayton participated in the battles of Stone Mountain, Mission Ridge and in Sherman's campaign. [HV]

After the war, he lived in Winser, Ill; Centerville, Ia; Geneva, Ks.; Clinton, Mo; Mansfield, Mo; Van Buren, Ark; Muskogee, Ok; and Roland, Ok. Clayton is interred in Oologah Cemetery, Oologah, Okla.

Clayton was enumerated in the household of his father in the Census of 1850 as a resident of Brown County, Indiana.

Alonzo enlisted on January 2, 1864 in Co. F., 14th NJ Inf; he recieve a disability discharge on December 14, 1864, at Newark N.J. At enlistment, he was 5' 11 1/2" in height, was light complexioned, had grey eyes and brown hair. He was listed as a farmer. During his service, he was hit in the back by a ball during the battle of Spottsylvania and suffered from typhoid fever in June 1864. [HV]

After the war, he lived in Linn Co. Ks. until 1910; in Toms River, 1910-1918; and Linn Co. Ks. the rest of his life. [HV].

Alonzo was listed in the household of his father in the Census of 1850 (age 8) and 1860 (age 18).

Peter served in the Civil War. He enlisted in Co. F., 14th NJ Inf. on August 18, 1862; transferred to the Navy, serving on the USS Allegheny and the USS Potomska. He re-enlisted on April 25, 1864 and was discharged on June 5, 1865. During his service, he suffered a gunshot wound below the knee on board ship at White Oak River, Ga.

The estate of Peter C. was administered through the Ocean County Surrogate Office ref. Doc. AA:3-65. The documents listed a date of death as 12-17-1918.
