Old Methodist Church Cemetery
Hooper and Washington Streets
Toms River

Joseph Lawrence conveyed one acre plot of land known as the Old Burying Ground in Toms River to the Trustees of the Toms River Methodist Meeting House on June 18, 1828. It is not know how old the cemetery was when it was conveyed to the Methodists; however the oldest stone still standing in the 1930's was that of Timothy Thomson dated 1808. The cemetery was closed to burials ca. 1905. The data below were published in the July 1931 issue of "The Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey." It should be noted that many of the gravestones inventoried in 1931 are either no longer legible or not longer in existence. A lot has transpired over the past 75 years. Some of elements on a gravestone contain only the name of a husband or wife with no birth/death data. For genealogical purposes I have included those names in the listing even when there is no indication that the individual was interred in the plot.
