Below is the introduction to the
1991 Manuscript --Dover Township Federal Census Data, 1850 through
1900
Introduction
The Federal Census data contained in this manuscript were transcribed from the
microfilm records supplied by the National Archives Microfilm Rental Program. It
covers the geographic area of Dover Township as it existed at the time of the
Federal Census.
Data have been transcribed for the five Federal Census of 1850 through 1900
except 1890 which is not available. Not all the data element fields contained in
the microfilm records were transcribed. In order to simplfy the task, the data elements
felt most useful from a geneological point of view were selected. In general, the
listing contains names, relationship to head of household, age information, occupation,
birth place if different from New Jersey.
The data were transcribed during the period March 1990 through April 1991. This
manuscript contains over 2700 family records for the five Census years that have
been transcribed. With the aid of a computer, it was possible to transcribe on the
average about 20 family records per hour. After the initial transcription, the data were
audited against the orginal microfilm records. Efforts were made to present the data as
accurately as possible. When a record was illegible or an unfamilar name appeared,
an attempt was made to check the entry against previous year or subsequent year
census data. An attempt was made to correct obvious misspellings. However, names
which are not popular today are presented in a true and faithful spelling as
presented in the Census data.
Below is a list of the abreviations contained in the listings.
- M - male
- F - female
- b. - place of birth or date of birth
- s. - single
- m. - number of years married
- wd. - widow/widower
- c. - number of children
- 1. - number of children living at time of census
- imm. - year of immigration to the U.S.
Corrections and additions to these data are welcomed.
Please feel free to make copies of all or parts of this manuscript for your own

It is my intentions to convert the entire manuscript to a collection of web-accessible
data pages. The current document is a work in progress and will be updated as the
project progresses.
