Geneology Information
Applegates of Ocean County, New Jersey
Prepared by Richard Kuntz, Allenwood, NJ
(Updated - 6/23/2008)

Introduction:
The majority of the materials contained in this site are a compilation of materials originally discovered and recorded by others. A substantial portion of the Applegate material is the result of efforts undertaken by my uncle, Donald T. Applegate (1896-1976) of Toms River, New Jersey.

His files indicate that he began his research in the 1940s and continued until his death in 1976. In addition to collecting and recording state and county birth, death and marriage records, he gathered and organized the Applegate records from previous researchers, most notably, Mary E. Applegate, and Kenneth P. Applegate.

In addition to collecting the birth, death and marriage records from the state archives, he transcribed all of the Applegates in the Surrogate's office of the 21 counties in New Jersey through the 1950's.

Those records have been transcribed from his original notes by me and have been shared with two contemporary Applegate researchers, Hugh Voorees of Charles Town, West Virginia and Howard G. Applegate of Canutillo, Texas.

As is the case with many family geneologists, my interest in the subject came after the death of a principal source, in my case my uncle. Even though I spent most of my life, until his death, only a few miles away from him, I have no recollection of ever discussing geneology with him.

My initial efforts had been to concentrate on identifying and organizing the records of the Applegates of Ocean County, New Jersey.

Ocean County became a county in 1850 from land area previously part of Monmouth and Burlington Counties. An analysis of the 1850 Ocean County census indicate that the Applegate surname can be traced back to three branches. Those are :

Jacob (1723-1818) and Esther Irons (1732-1803)

Louis (more to follow)

Thomas L. (1792-1868) and Hannah T. Thompson (1796-1871)

Bibliography Index:
I have attempted to maintain a standard bibliography for all the documents on this site. The comprehensive bibliography is HERE.

Genesis of Ocean County Applegates

The records indicate that most of the Applegates that have been residents of Ocean County are decedants of Bartholomew1 the eldest son of Thomas the immigrant. The document in this link provides an oultine of the first four known generations of Bartholomew1

Jacob5 Applegate and Esther Irons

By far, the largest number of Applegates in Ocean County are descendants of Jacob and Esther. At the present time, I do not have a comprehensive index of those descendants. They are in separate documents, by generations.
  1. Jacob/Esther and children (6th generation) (Six sons and 1 daughter)
  2. Granchildren (7th generation males) (Thirty-two grandsons and thirty-seven granddaughters have been identified)
  3. Great-granchildren (8th generation males) (105 great-grandsons and ninety-eight great-granddaughters have been identified)

Thomas L. Applegate & Hannah T. Thompson

At the present time, the most complete set of Applegate materials relate to the line of Thomas L. Applegate (1792-1868) and Hannah Thompson (1796-1871). As you guess, I'm a member of that line.

Historical Documents:
The files of DTA contain many documents of historical interest and copies of correspondence with other researchers of the time period. I will attempt to select and publish the more interesting ones on this web site for others to enjoy.

Census Information:
In the early 1990s, I transcribed some Feberal Census Data relating to Ocean County and Dover Township. Two manuscripts were produced; Dover Township, Federal Census Data, 1850 throught 1900 (1991) and Ocean County, Federal Census, 1850 (1993). On a limited basis, those manuscripts were circulated to some local research libraries and historical societies.
