- What made you decide to
go into acting?
My first dream was to be a professional baseball player. But after I topped
out at 5’8” and had extensive shoulder surgery on my pitching arm, I needed to find another dream. That’s
when I was introduced to the world of improv during my freshman year at Vassar College.
I did one show and I was hooked. It was such an amazing rush. As soon as I walked off stage, I knew that this was all I could
ever imagine doing.
- Tell us a little about
"Skills Like This" and why would should go see it!
Because it’s super-awesome! That’s
why!...More of an explanation? Well, it’s the story of a writer who comes to terms with the fact that he’s not
actually good at writing. But he realizes that what he does have a talent for is stealing things. It’s a really funny
indie flick that I collaborated on with my buddy from college, Spencer Berger. We wrote it fresh out of school while I was
still crashing in my parents’ garage. It’s been a long journey, but after a year of festivals (where we won the
“Audience Award” at SXSW and “Best of the Fest” honors at Edinburgh) we’re finally in theaters
nationwide!
- I see that you both act
in and wrote for "Skills Like This" as well as "Fish Out of Water: The Nightmare" and "Fish Out Of
Water: Movie Night." Do you prefer acting over writing, or vice versa?
I love doing both.
Acting is my first true love, but writing is a close second. I could be happy doing either for the rest of my life.
- What is your dream role?
Actually, the part of “Andy” was awfully close. If only I’d been able to play my own evil
twin AND kill myself in order to save myself…then it would truly be the perfect role.
- What is the most challenging
and the most rewarding part of being an actor?
The most challenging part is really the grind
of trying to get the job. All the rejection and disappointment. It takes a lot to stay positive and enthusiastic. But as soon
as you’re on set, it all feels worth it because it’s the most fun job in the world.
- If you weren’t acting,
what back up career would have?
History teacher.
- Which celebrity, artist or famous person would you have a complete “fan boy” moment when meeting?
Steve Martin.
- We’d love your recommendations on the following:
- Book you read recently
Paul Feig’s “Kick Me” and “Superstud.”
- TV program you can't miss
Dexter.
- Movie you saw at the theater or rented
Ummm…“Skills Like This”!
It’s fantastic!
- Artist or band you love
Van Gogh.
Talking Heads.
- Restaurant you like to dine
Craft…it’s ridiculous how delicious
this place is. I dream about it.
- Do you have a favorite
charity? If it is not a well-known charity, could you tell us a little about it?
Actually,
there was a “Skills Like This” charity event for the Cystic Fibrosis
Foundation where we raised over $60K. Also, St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital is a wonderful place.
And the Matt Carey Fund at Vassar College is dear to my heart.
- Congrats on your recent marriage! How is married life treating
you thus far?
Why, splendidly! Thanks for asking! We’re actually about to go on our
belated honeymoon right after the Supernatural Convention in England. A week in London
and a week in Paris. We can’t wait!
Gabe in "The Bannen Way"
- Who is your hero?
Kathryn Fiore. She’s an amazing woman.
- If you could change one thing about yourself, what would you change and why?
I
think I’d enjoy being taller. Then I’d be able to school Jared at one-on-one.
- Can you describe your life in just one word?
Exciterriffic. That’s
a word, right?
- When do you expect “Skills
Like This” to be in theaters nationwide?
At this very moment! We’re actually
rolling out to at least 100 theaters over the next month. You can check out our website (www.skillslikethis.com) to see if we’re at a theater near you. And if we’re not, contact your local arthouse
theater and say “what the heck?”
- What can fans do to help promote “Skills Like This?
Tell everyone you’ve
ever known about the movie! As we have zero budget for advertising, we depend entirely on word of mouth. So, tell your friends!
Show people the trailer! Rent a bus and go on a field trip to the theater! Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
…nice talking with you!
