Why I Started Collecting Surplus Firearms

History

I started collecting in 2003. After watching many war movies growing up and still watching them today I was bitten by the bug. I thought it would be nice to own a piece of history. I bought my first rifle through a dealer, it is a Yugoslavian M48A Mauser in like new unissued condition with all matching numbers. It was packed with cosmoline (a grease like preservative) and it took a lot of elbow grease to get rid of it totally. I was hooked right away and wanted more. I found out about the C&R license (Curios and Relics) and got one as soon as I could. There's a link in the links section to a site with info on how to get one. I have quite a few rifles now with no signs I'm going to slow down. It's a great hobby and I enjoy looking up info on my rifles. There's a lot of history in surplus rifles.

Those of you who are collectors know what I mean. Those of you who are interested in starting or are just curious for info check the links page.

I have several rifles in need of total restoring. None of them have bolts, or magazines. The stocks are in pretty rough shape and all are missing bits and pieces. These are not pictured. I will add pages with pictures that show the progress of the restoration.

Some of the rifles pictured in my site were in very bad condition and needed help. I've gotten pretty good at refinishing surplus firearms. A lot of collectors frown on changing anything about these firearms. I'm not collecting them as an investment, I'm collecting them as a part of history. I feel that if a rifle is in bad shape it's my duty as a collector to try and bring it back to as close to original as possible. I'm sure there are those who will and do disagree but that's life. I try to get as much info on each firearm as I can. I'd never haphazardly refinish a firearm with out researching.
